Found this thread while Google searching for the instructions on setting up my RSST with cheesecloth. Thread had me intrigued, so I rewicked one of my protank coils as per the OP's instructions. What can I say, but that it works wonderfully! I've been using my cheesecloth rewicked protank for 3-4 hours now, and I love it! Going to rewick all of my used protank coils this week and weekend. Thanks for the guide!

My god that was easy. I'm not up for recoiling yet, but did a rewick using this method -- cotton though -- could not believe it was so easy. So how long should the coil itself last -- I understand they pop eventually but have never had that happen. What can you expect with good cleaning and maintenance -- or does that even matter in how long a coil would last? Thanks for a MITEY great post!

For the folks that contributed to this thread, THANK YOU!! I did a 30/30 on my Protank II and I am very happy! No more leaks, no more dry hits, and the flavor is now just as good as the few cartos I've tried! Wo0t!

Also tried this with my Vision Vivi Nova. 30 threads (15 doubled over) was giving me a slight dry hit when I chain vape, so I added another 15 threads on top (like one would on bottom coils LOL!) - no more dry, yay! When I get around to recoiling, hopefully I can fish 45 threads through the coil haha!

EDIT - towards the end of the second tank full, the PT2 started flooding (juice is 55/45 if it matters). Re-wicked to 40/40, so far so good....

Hey everybody!
Have not been on the forums in awhile, but I had to log in just to comment on this thread.
Cheesecloth has changed my life...lol
I have been vaping for over a year and this my first attempt at rewicking anything....!
The only problem I had was a busted a coil on my first try.
Once I figured out to not be so, well...vigorous in pulling the old wick out, it worked. Also, I took a needle and picked...poked around the middle of the coil and took a few from there before pulling it from the ends. ;)
I gave it a shot a few days ago and waited til I was sure of how it was going to turn out.
And it is fabulous!
The vapor production is out of this world and you will not believe how the juice will taste.
It is so much cleaner.
Love it!
So, thanks for posting this and if I can do it, anybody can do it!!!

Just got my first ever protank of any sort... the 2. It worked okay but I noticed a continuous slight dry/burnt taste. After about half an hour of that, I turned to this method and it's tasting MUCH better. I'm vaping the same juice side by side with a Joye 510 dripping atty and the Protank 2 is only (very) slightly less intense in flavor. Considering the convenience of it's tank, this is a win. Very nice! Thank you :)

I had been curious about cotton wicks for quite some time now. With no wire for my AGA on hand, that wasn't going to happen. Then I saw the http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/clearomizers/377470-installing-cotton-you-kanger-t3s.html thread started by floatingtrem.

I figured, "Hell, I've got some extra T3 heads sitting around, why not?". And so it began.

Before I start, 2 things.

1. All of the pictures were taken with my phone, as it's much easier to get them to my photobucket with my phone than it is with my DSLR. Sorry for the quality.

2. I have only done this a few times, and in the last 2 days. I do not know how long these wicks will last. What I DO know, is that they have not needed ANY break-in for flavor, they work great right away.

Here's how I did it.

First, pull out an old (or new I suppose) T3 head. My heads were already cleaned and dried before storage. If yours are used, clean them well (however you like to do so) and dry thoroughly! Remove all of the silica wick with tweezers, small pliers, fingernails, whatever, and dry burn.

IMAG0036_zps5c65e25e.jpg

I use 100% cotton cheesecloth, the package doesn't specify bleached vs. unbleached, so I can't attest to what it is.

Then I separate 15 strands of cotton for use as a wick, and a single piece to thread the wick through the coil.

IMAG0035_zps6d9560bb.jpg

Double over the single strand and thread it through the coil.

IMAG0038_zps835b3482.jpg

Put the new cotton wick material through the loop you have created.

IMAG0040_zps7bce70db.jpg

And pull the new wick (carefully) through the coil. I have found with 15 strands, there is very little resistance, and minimal distortion of the coil.

IMAG0042_zps19eff018.jpg

Trim to length. I like surgical snips (like they'd use for sutures) or sharp swiss army knife scissors.

IMAG0044_zps31cb266a.jpg

I then take another 30 strands (yes, 30 more) and install them as the flavor wick, and again, trim to length.

IMAG0046_zps45fdbd0d.jpg

I then install the grommet (standard direction, not reversed) and the center post. At this point I have been checking the resistance to make sure there are no shorts, as it's much easier to fix a short at this point than it is when your clearo is all full of yummy juice.

IMAG0047_zps5c541d05.jpg

That's it! With 15 strands for the wick (doubled over to make 30 when installed) and 30 strands for the flavor wick, I have not needed a SINGLE break-in puff. I fill the clearo, let it sit for about 1 minute to fully absorb, and start vaping. Tastes great with good vapor right from the get go. With this wick combo, I have also had NOT ONE SINGLE GURGLE thus far. I'm only about 2 fills in, but so far, I'm EXTREMELY happy with the results. Unless I burn or severely damage a coil, I don't see myself buying hardly any new T3 heads. This REALLY IS WORKING THAT WELL FOR ME!

I hope this helps someone. Happy vaping :)

Hi! Thanks for this post! I saved all my old coil heads and now I'm going to give thisvidea a shot BUT I don't have a way to test the ohm's afterward. Is it a must to test it? I know it would be nice to know I just haven't got the tools for itvyet. I'm 6 weeks into vaping and today I finally get my vision spinner battery!!!!

I would strongly suggest you test the rebuilt head before you put it on the battery. One leg of the coil, which is the positive side, goes very close to the shell, negative side, and if it, the positive side, touches the shell you could do permanent damage to the battery.

If you have one close by, go to http://www.harborfreight.com/# and pick up one of their cheap DMMs for around $3 - $5.
Sometimes they have the red ones, http://www.harborfreight.com/#, on sale or even give them away free. I get a sales flyer from them in my Sunday paper and there's always a 20% or 25% off coupon included.

Sorry...

Yes, the first link is to Harbor Freight Tools Home page. This supplier has a wealth of items that can be used in our hobby at a reasonable price. Also be aware that MOST, but not all, items are from China. As you browse this forum you will find many references to Harbor Freight.

DMM = Digital Multi Meter. Also referred to as a DVM (Digital Volt Meter).

There are actually 2 types of meters, a digital meter where the numbers are displayed on a digital screen and an analog meter where a mechanical pointer moves to cover the appropriate number.

Digital meters are more accurate and there is no guess-work in trying to figure out what the actual number(s) is/are, and where the decimal point goes.

I just found this thread after doing a search for troubleshooting evod coil rebuilds. I've been rebuilding with cotton ball wicks, and I'm getting very frustrated because of the inconsistency in the wicks. There's usually too much or too little cotton, and it's hard to get it right. I'm definitely going to try this, hoping it cuts down on my frustration level. It's to the point now, where I want to give up.
I've found a rather simple setup that works well, and that I can use every day without too much trouble. I'm still new at this, so it was my intention get a setup before investing more in the world of vaping. My main goal was to get off the cigs, which I've done, but I don't want some crappy wicks to be the thing that gets me smoking again.

I've bought the red one and I have a hard time using it. The numbers jump all around, even when trying to zero it out. Are they all like this?

Not all. The ones I have (3) are reasonably stable considering how much they cost. It's the cheap leads more so than the meter itself. Make sure the banana plugs and tips are as clean as you can get them. I wipe them off with a rag dampened with WD40 every once in a while which cleans them up pretty good.

I have actually gone over to the Ohmmeter module sold by MadVapes for $20 now which eliminates the need to adjust the readout for the lead length.

Nope, never cleaned or boiled the cheesecloth. That is really only an issue if the cotton has been overly processed as far as I know. I use cheesecloth in all of my RBA's too, and have never once boiled or cleaned it in any way. Just cut, install, and vape. I don't even let it sit and saturate as many people do (I've seen up to an hour!) once it LOOKS saturated (about 30 seconds) I start vaping. Never a burnt hit or a bad taste.
I'm with ya on this. If it takes an hour for it to saturate I will use a different material because I want it to wick fast enough to vape... I've never been a patient person. lol

So I finally did it! The cheesecloth works great in my device. I'm glad I read the whole thread, because after following the OP' s directions, I found that using 20 strands were better. So with 20 doubled over in the coil, and 20 as a flavor wick, it's a total of 60 strands. I tried it with 15, even doubling the flavor wicks, but it resulted in some gurgling, no leaking, but still an annoyance. You guys rock
