How important are sweeteners & tart/sour drops?

I agree with Danny on the idea of waiting until your mix is steeped before adding anything. However, there are flavor mixes where I'm experienced with the components involved and decide before mixing/steeping that sweetener will be in the recipe. This is risky business though, and the safer bet is just to wait until you get an idea of how the mix tastes without any 'additions'.

As for the question of how important they are, I'd say very. Some mixes you might think are just 'whatever' until you add .5-2% sweetener and then it becomes heaven. Any addition that can turn mixes around like that are important to my DIY arsenal.

Most of my fruit flavors have one or both. Without them most plain fruit flavors strike me as musty or stale. A tiny bit of Sour brightens the flavor without making it actually sour tasting. I like sweet vapes and add sweetener liberally, but that's not for everyone. I always start with tiny amounts and add just a bit at a time until it seems right.

That is also very true. As you gain experience you know what additives are needed and can add them as part of the initial mix. It is also very important to write it all down and keep records.

Amen to that.

Good info. I plan on getting some Lorann tart/sour for sure, and I gotta do some research on sweeteners. I'm not too picky about things as long as I like the basic flavor of a juice, but it would be great to really dial in on the desired sweet/sourness.

For sweeteners you could try TFA sweetener, TFA EM, EzSweets (google it, and dilute it once you get it to a 50% strength meaning half EzSweets and half PG), or any sweet flavor like marshmallow/vanillin. Everyone has their opinion on sweeteners and which one is best, which ones mute flavors, etc. I would try just getting a small sample of each type and adding it to a simple flavor that you like. Say for example you have a nice plain blueberry mix you like. Make a handful of 5ml batches of them and add a drop or two of a different sweetener to each one and wait a couple days. Taste test and see which one you like the most.

There is also nothing wrong with vaping before steeping and it is encouraged as it gives you a base line to compare the changes to as it matures. If it taste good after mixing please do vape it. But it also doesn't hurt to make a second batch to steep. All we are saying is to try to fight off the urge to adjust and enhance the mix until it is steeped. There is nothing wrong with wanting to experiment but do realize the taste does change with time. So if you start adjusting right off the bat and find that perfect mix. What you may find is that perfect mix may taste good now but a few days to a few weeks the taste can change in to well you know something bad down the road.

I'm gonna be doing really small batches out the gate, but I'm gonna do a lot of experimenting for sure. I still have a lot of question marks and unknowns when it comes to vaping, and the 1st hand experience and side-by-side comparisons will be invaluable. Every time I'd go to the B&M and pay top dollar to have some guy mix my juice, but the whole time I'm wondering what exactly he's doing/using, and of thinking of ways to improve it. So once it got to the point, DIY is exactly what I need to be doing.

I usually add 1 or 2 drops of real lemon (the kind in the plastic lemon from the grocery store) per 5ml of fruit mixes to make them pop
Oh ya? That sounds good. I think I actually have some lime drops in the fridge, but that would only work in maybe a couple situations. I could see lemon complimenting a wide range of flavors.

I just mixed up a FW Yellow Cake at 20%. It was good, but I added one drop of stevia (about 7ml of juice remaining in the test batch) to it to see what that would do. Seems less appealing to me now, but better vapor production. No doubt there is a learning curve to this. But if you enjoy it, as I do, it's not really a problem. Maybe EM would have been a better choice? Lots of great advice here. But the "make small test batches" advice has now registered loud and clear. That, with documentation, is the way to go. As well as spending hours in this forum.
