I work a job where I go to different areas of the city to do work, and I always take some time to visit the local vape shop(s). I live in St. Louis, MO and in the past year about 15-20 new vape shops have popped up all over the place. A few months ago, the selection was mostly eGo batteries and Innokin products with a few tanks to choose from. Now most shops I visit have 5-6 mech mods to choose from (clones obviously) and a few RBA's and RDA's (clones as well). There's also some shops with over 100 flavors of ejuice. Some of the shops have advertised themselves as "vape lounges", adding some comfy furniture and a nice atmosphere. The shop owners are always really kind and the prices have become more reasonable as well; I guess I'd chalk that up to competition.

So my question for you guys is: How are your local B&M's? Do they have good selections? Do they have a chance with competing with online shops in terms of prices?

I'm interested in hearing if you guys have seen an explosion of vape shops, and their selections as well. Thanks

There are many vapeshops around me. Some exclusive to vaping and some that are also, for lack of a better word, head shops. A couple have great selections of well known e-liquids at reasonable prices If you consider not having to pay shipping or waiting on vapemail.

So far, I have not seen any good prices on mod, batteries or tanks of any kind. Forget about buying coils or rebuildable supplies. The prices are usually double/triple that of online suppliers, and more if you consider FT or other Chinese suppliers. One place I visited wanted $5.99 +tax for a Nautalis coil, nine bucks for three feet of 28 ga kanthal and five bucks a foot for ecowool.

I realize these shops have overhead and need to make a profit but, so do online retailers.

The shop closest to me isn't great on selection, but it's worth the drive to go to fantasy in montrose. Great shop, huge selection of lots of different...stuffs. walked in today for the first time in a while (moved) and it blew my mind...they had a crazy amount of ecig supplies! Apparently they started ordering everything a few months ago. Super happy, worth the drive!

the only thing i don't like about the brick and mortars around me is the consistency of stock. the main one i go to is called vape dojo. the first time i ever went in they had cases full of different mods. authentics, clones, RDAs, regulated stuff, all kinds of tanks and accessories and what not. now they are down to about 3 different mods, 2 or 3 RDAs a couple regulated devices, and 2-3 high end tanks. whenever i go in i ask about stock and when they are expecting shipments and they never know. like what? either you ordered more or you didn't. i can understand with customs and what not being unsure of an exact day but not knowing if you're getting something or not is ridiculous. and half the time if i see something i want but can't afford, ill go back 2 days later, cash in hand and they are sold out. and no exaggeration this next scenario happens EVERY SINGLE time i go into the shop: someone who is using a basic ego setup gets interested by the higher end stuff and starts asking questions. the sales person will hype it up and try to make a sale and i can see the customers eyes lighting up ready to take the next step in vaping and then the sales person will say one of two things: "well we have chargers but no batteries" or "we have batteries but just ran out of chargers" so the customer leaves empty handed. idk maybe I'm naive. i understand running a vape shop is probably difficult with so many products flooding the market and having to deal with customs and what not but this place is just so disorganized. as of late I've started driving an hour round trip to another vape shop who has consistent stock of there product and more options.

As far as standard equipment (tanks, mods, etc.) pretty good.

As far as rebuildable attys go... Fairly dismal. Rather disappointing since I'm hooked on RBA's (Haven't found a stock atty that comes remotely close to what I can get from a rebuildable) but I guess I represent part of a small consumer base that actually has time to sit down for 5 minutes and rebuild a coil :p

I'm sort of in your area, I frequent a Vape Dojo in Bel Air, MD and while the staff is friendly and they have a decent selection just as you said they don't seem to keep anything in stock for more than a day or so. The one close to me sells out of 18650 batteries almost every single time the day they get them in and while their juices are good I've been using them so much that I just had to explore other places.

That being said...You should REALLY check out Delaware Vapor, it's completely worth the extra drive. 100+ juices to choose from, major names like Space Jam, Steamjunk, Cosmic Fog and Five Pawns to list a few plus they easily have the largest selection of many things within 100 miles of my location, 100+ different drip tips, easily 40+ different rebuildable atomizers to choose from, at least two dozen mech mods, with numerous 18650 DNA30 box mods thrown in the mix. HUGE amount of stuff in the cases, probably another 100 stick batteries in stock in the cases from all different manufacturers. I was honestly blown away with their selection and stock of inventory, tons of legit mods/attys as well as good quality clones like infinite, really a very nice vape shop with super friendly staff. My ONLY gripe is that they do not have a drip bar and you have to taste all their juices out of a 3.7v ego stick battery/clearo setup. While that works for many people I'm mostly vaping between 60w and 100w+ on my mech mods and I simply can't taste much of anything through one of those things anymore.

The next place other than Vape Dojo I would recommend is Kahuna Vapor in Ellicott City. Not a huge amount of inventory for mods, but they have a great friendly staff and a lot of higher end juices that you can test-drip right into your own device which is a HUGE plus for me, every single juice they sell they have a test-dripper for(makes me super happy). They also have their own line of juices which are quite good, I will definitely go back there to get some more Diode by High Voltage as I believe it may have just become my new favorite juice, super tasty.

There are several B&M's close to me but only one that I think has a good selection. It's really the only one I go to now. If I go to another one, I almost feel like I'm cheating sense I've got such a good relationship with them. About the only thing I don't get from them is wick and wire. If they sold Kanthal by the spool instead of by the foot I would probably buy from them but it just doesn't make sense to buy by the foot when a spool is so cheap.

Unfortunately I don't own a car to get out to B&M shops that I know have good offerings. All the shops close to me are owned by those that are interested in making money off the vape craze so everything and I mean everything has a high mark up and in some cases more than 50% and they wonder why the items in there displays are collecting dust! So at present I do most of my shopping online and have a regular run on vapemail!

We just had our first open up in town, I wanted to do my own but I couldn't attract investors.

It has a decent selection, although priced kind of high. I don't mind the higher prices, I like the fact that I can try a juice before I buy it, I've got a whole closet full of nasty juice I've gotten over the years.

When in an emergency, it's good to have a local to get parts and juice from.

Where I live quite a few B&M's have opened up. Most of them carry sub par juice and the employees don't have a clue but a few of them are great. The one closest to my house is awesome. Has a great juice selection that is only slightly more expensive than buying online, a really good gear selection and most importantly very knowledgable and friendly employees who are great at answering questions and helping out with the rebuildables/hobby aspect of vaping.

The list of local vendors is growing pretty fast by me. Three opened in Staten Island this year so far. I"m not counting those that have opened in Manhattan and Brooklyn, as that would take me all day. I've been to all three on Staten Island though. One seems to be great for juice, however what they have set up for actual testing of the juice is just around 2% of what they carry. They're mainly a head shop, or at least started out that way. Their e-cigarette section seems to be quickly taking up the rest of the shop though. They didn't have a tasting bar at all when they first opened. Also, they were mainly selling over priced clones in the beginning. They've since reduced the price on the clones, and as they sell out they have been replacing them with genuine gear. Unfortunately however, along with the better gear, they seem to be getting a bit snobby. They really only bother taking their time with clients who cloud chase. They'll take their time with me, as I can at least talk the talk because of this forum, and I can tell they're hoping to make some nice sales from me. I've only purchased juice though, and it'll likely stay that way.

The second shop to open is mainly geared towards beginner vapers, which is fine as the head shop filled with advanced gear is just down the road I guess. Thing is, that beginner stuff is HUGELY overpriced, and the staff is telling fibs on what it's capable of. They have a ton of different cigalike kits from various vendors, and all the usual lies from those vendors are plastered to their walls and display cases. No way that many of those cigalikes last as long as this vendor is claiming. Further, they're also as snooty about their gear as the shop down the road, although they cater to customers at the opposite end of the spectrum. Actually, a bit more snooty. It isn't that they ignore the more advanced vapers. They're downright rude. The guy who owns the place is a middle aged man who looks at those using larger then ego sized mods as druggies, and the woman who works there pushed nothing but a Vapour Couture kit on me. Oh, and a very overpriced, blinged out ego kit when that failed.

The most recent one to open is the one closest to me, and the one with the most potential I think. Friendly, welcoming owner. Carries everything from mech mods and drippers to ego starter kits. While the selection for both juice and gear still has some growing to do, you can tell that it will continue to grow. The owner was genuinely curious about the gear anyone was using when they came in if they were already vaping, looking for ideas to grow his own selection. He vaped himself, as does his college aged son who works with him. His son and his friends all seem to be into cloud chasing, but the owner himself is kind of middle of the road and spends some time with both regulated and mech mods. It's the largest shop out of them all, has a great lounge area, and a pool table. The only thing I don't like is the crowd. The place is getting really busy, but really, where else is anyone going to go on Staten Island considering the alternatives? The snooty places aren't doing themselves any favors.

The closet B&M to me, the one where I got my start, is in transition. The owner has hired a "mixologist" who is really into the mods and drippers. They are increasing their inventory with mods, drippers and other "higher end" products. He has always had a good selection of starter gear and is keeping that supply up.

He previously carried a small selection of juices, probably 20 or so. He is now including more brands and is producing their own juices.

He just gave me five of their new juices to review for him... I know, tough job, but somebody has to do it!!!

My favorite B&M is somewhat local to me, about ~1 hours drive but anytime I am in that area I will stop and buy some juices or sample some at the bar. They have a pretty good selection, one wall is all starter kit oriented vape-gear, the second wall is dedicated to mechs and RDA/RBAs with a few VV/VW options, the rest is dedicated to the juice bar and lounge area and they've recently started carrying other e-juice besides their house mixes. All of their prices seem fair enough, about what I would expect to pay online + shipping--thankfully they are not one to sell clones at original pricing. I don't mind paying the extra few dollars to be able to hang out and sample juices and talk vape gear with fellow vapers.
