I'm just curious, because although I can get a coil to taste decent for a few tanks by swirling and making sure it's well wicked, I wonder if it's still better to clean them frequently? For example, the gunk that's on coils is got to be bad for you when it's vaped right? We've all seen the gunk smoke when we dry burn coils. The question is, do we breath that nasty smoke when we vape on a dirty coil as well? or does that nasty smoke only occurs during dry burns?

I clean mine every three tanks or so, depends on whether the taste is still there and if the thing is wicking. I usually wash them out and then soak them, either in PGA or just hot water. After they dry out I try and look at the coil and see if it needs dry burning or not - some gunk just won't come off on it's own.

The coil taste is the wicking material. That taste will be there unless you are using some type atty without a fiber wick. As long as you've got juice around the coil it can't burn the wicking material unless you've got some serious voltage issues or short. The coil heats the juice but the juice cools down the coil. A dirty coil will reduce the amount of vapor it can produce because the gunk builds up on the coil between it and the juice in the wick and it can't heat the juice up because the gunk is like insulation. The coil will overheat once it gets enough gunk on it that the juice can't cool it down and it dies. So no unless your dry or have a problem you aren't burning anything so no smoke.
