Start with a lower grit sand paper. 200-300, after you have removed the finish you can use a higher grit 2000-3000 to get a smoother finish.
If you are going for a real smooth polished look, step up on sanding. Start with 200-300, then use 500, then use 1000, then 2000, etc.

The lower grit sand paper removes material faster, but will leave it with a brushed or matte finish.
The higher grit paper leaves a nice smooth finish, but will clog up and stop working well when trying to remove a lot of material.

btw, I sanded mine down and repainted it a different color.
