How to tell if a cartidge is out?

Obviously, I'm a noob, and I have volt cartidges. How do you know when your cartridge is out? I hear that once it starts tasting like crap or when there is little vapor, you should switch cartridges. But I find the cartridges are very inconsistent (sometimes I puff will taste like crap w/no vapor, and sometimes it tastes fine). I can't really tell. Any tips?

Hi charlie310, WELCOME, is your set-up a 2pc or a 3pc unit?
If it is 2pc you have a battery and a cartomizer.
If it's a 3pc unit you'll have the battery, the atomizer and a cartridge.

In either case you can purchase a bottle of liquid and re-fill or top them up.

Usually when the hit starts getting inconsistent it's time to re-fill or replace.
You should know right away if it's burning, but then it might be too late
to reuse/refill it as the burnt taste will likely stay with it.

I don't have the volt but hope this helps a little.

I am a complete newbie at this myself, and I also ordered a Volt earlier in the week and was wondering the same thing. Soon after I got my Volt I purchased some refill e-liquid. When I have to change batteries I use a different carto and top off the one I was using. So far I haven't had any problems. The main thing I noticed is that you will slowly notice it losing it "punch" and taste and will switch out as soon as I notice that. Then again, I am only a week into vaping so I can be doing it wrong...lol

That means that cartridges only last for like 10 drags. Granted, I do light it up until the vaporizer cuts off. But, that really sucks: these cartridges don't last at all.

I bought cheap starter kit yesterday with 10 cartridges (info says: Per cartridge can be smoked around 200 mouth), but in reality it takes less than 100 to deplete one. Right now I'm down to 4.

Yes, I read on Volt's website that one cartridge should last 300 puffs. But only after like 30, my classic grape cartridge is not tasting as strong, and it actually tastes like crap (like chemicals).

I must be doing something wrong.

Hello and welcome to ECF!!! Sounds like you need to upgrade to something that can withstand chain vaping. Maybe try an eGo/kGo kit with selectable voltage. Also what nic level are you using? If you are having to light it up that much you may need to increase your nic level.

Let me clarify: I take big drags, enough where the vaporizer cuts out. Not, I keep taking drags until the battery dies.

Thats what I meant also, like Myk said though the feed rate on most cartos can't take that much vaping. Dripping or maybe a carto tank may work better at that vaping rate.

There are a number of differences between smoking & vaping which involve a sort of learning curve. I don't know a whole lot & have never used a Volt (or other KR808 PV) but will pass on what I can. First, with vapor most of the nic is absorbed in the mouth, throat & nasal passages rather than in the lungs as with smoke. Therefore there's no need to inhale as deeply as we did with cigarettes. Also, a PV just seems to work better by taking slower draws into the mouth & holding the vapor for a moment, then inhaling from there, metering in a bit of air through nose & mouth if desired.

If you're using a Volt, AFAIK they are all 2-pc, meaning they use cartomizers instead of separate cartridge / atomizer setups. Best thing to do is to get some e-liquid (juice) & top off the carto every so often so the filler material stays rather moist. *If the coil gets dry you won't get any vapor or flavor because there'll be no liquid there for it to atomize. *If the filler isn't kept pretty damp/wet the coil may not wick as fast as you vape. *If you vape as fast as you might hot-box a cigarette there is no way liquid can be replenished to the coil as fast as it's being depleted, so toasting the carto is pretty much inevitable.

Among people who require/desire a cig-sized/shaped PV and are willing to put up with the limitations inherent with small batteries, the Volts are highly regarded here on the Forum. For folks who prefer a battery to go most/all day between charges and a juice delivery system that lasts longer than a couple hours, there are many excellent options available, a lot of them as kits for probably less than you paid for your Volt kit. But... nobody who sees you vaping one will mistake it for a cigarette. Which, when you think about it, ain't exactly a bad thing.... 14650 Black Carto Kit SLB KGO Starter Kit

Hope that helps... Happy Vaping! :vapor:

Thanks for your response; it really sheds light on everything. You hit it spot-on. I've always been known to smoke cigarettes really fast (like finishing a whole cigarette when my friend is 40% done). I still am not 100% clear on how my kr808 works, and it makes sense now that you say i'm smoking the vapor faster than it can replenish on the coil (well it kinda makes sense).

I guess your advice is to take smaller drags and leave the smoke in my mouth for a little bit. BTW, I think I did burn my "classic grape" cartridge. Does that mean it's ruined (like I will always get a nasty taste even though there is a good amount of liquid in it?)

Regarding the cartomizer, if it has a burnt taste yes, it's toast. I'm not sure but I think Volt's are supposed to be pretty good quality (somebody please correct me if I'm wrong on this), and generally if you keep it fairly wet a good carto will last a good while. "How long" depends on a number of variables, but longer with clearer, mostly PG liquid. Also, I wouldn't suggest taking "smaller" drags exactly, but "slower". If your PV has a 5-second cutoff that may turn out to be "smaller" for you as well. My E-Power 14650 has an 8-second cutoff (with a manual switch) which offended me when I first got it, but since it uses a much higher amp battery I can run low resistance cartos on it, and with the juice I use a 4 to 5-sec cook-time is about all I need anyway. A lot of this "learning curve" business is finding out how to get the most out of the setup you have, and the things you like/dislike about it. In the course of that you'll also learn to pay attention to how the vapor feels wherever it is - in your mouth, throat, lungs, etc. - & how to get the most enjoyment from it. Lots of stuff... all of which works together to keep the whole vaping experience exciting & fun!

BTW, a freshly charged Volt battery should be pushing 3.7 volts, which is what my E-Power is regulated at. Based on that fact and on posts I've read here by happy Volt users, I'd say once you get the hang of using that PV you'll get a very nice vape from it. If you can't find satisfaction with it there are lots of excellent PVs available for an upgrade, but your Volt is probably a good place to experiment & help you decide what you'll be looking for in an upgrade.

Best of luck, & Happy Vaping! :vapor:

I had the same problem with cartos. I was having to top them off every 10 minutes to get them to keep up with my chain vaping. I quickly moved on to clearomizers, which I am completely in love with. You may want to give these a try:
FLüXomizer™ KR808 Clearomizers : GotVapes.com, E-cigarette Supplies - Atomizers Cartomizers Mods Juice and more

I have not tried this specific clearo. First because I don't use 808, second because no one has, they are brand new improved versions. But the fluxos are popular and I expect great things from this revised version. I have an order of the 510 version on the way to me now. They were just released a few days ago.

The other advantage of a clearo- if you out vape it and get a dry hit, it is the only thing I have used or am aware of that it doesn't ruin it and leave it with the permanent burnt taste. It is gone on the next vape. :D

Normally I would recommend what I have tried and liked, but the clearos that I have used do not come in 808 threads.
