Miscellaneous:

Disposal: if you put a needle in the rubbish, and someone spikes themselves with it (easy to do when carrying a rubbish bag), bear in mind that they will have no idea where it came from (i.e. could it have been contaminated with a virus)? Anyone using hypodermics (for any reason) has a Duty of Care to dispose of them appropriately. The original vendor should be helpful in this respect - some will give you a 'sharps box' which you can return to them for disposal (you'll want the very smallest one that they stock); it should be free. Failing that, IV drug users are advised, if they do throw a syringe into domestic waste, to at least put it inside e.g. a coke can etc.

Needlestick: The classic way to spike yourself is when recapping the needle. We are told never to do this; however, if you're reusing the same needle, you're likely to want the cap back on it! In that case, put the cap on the table, and guide the syringe & needle (with one hand) back into the cap. Don't touch the cap, and keep your other hand clear. Once the needle's inside, and you want to 'click' the cap all the way on, push at the base of the cap - needles that aren't aligned properly can pierce the cap, straight into your finger!

It doesn't hurt much; I guarantee that, if you recap with the cap in your hand, you will eventually spike yourself! If that happens, there are two considerations: 1) The needle is now potentially contaminated - dispose of it! We all assume that we're not carrying any nasty blood-borne viruses, but it costs next to nothing to throw the needle out; the risk to others might be extremely small, but it isn't worth taking! 2) Nicotine is an extremely toxic substance, and the liquid is not solely nicotine. The (applicable parts of) current advice to reduce the amount of substance inoculated by needlestick injury is: encourage bleeding; run the injured part under running water. Don't suck it! To further reduce needlestick, we're taught to always consider disposal before using the needle - i.e. if you have a sharps box, have it nearby so that you don't have to turn/walk around with a needle!

Sterility/re-use:
It has to be a Good Thing that the syringes/needles are clinically clean (probably sterile), even though the liquid is simply for smoking. However, I would imagine that many will re-use their syringes and/or needles. Bear in mind that they're not designed for re-use, and will eventually fail. More importantly, is is possible that remnants of liquid in the syringe/needle might harbour microorganisms (realistically, they will harbour microorganisms - the only question is whether they're of a sufficient number and type to pose a problem).

There are two ways of looking at this:
  1. There is (extremely limited, privately-funded) research into whether the cartridge liquid contained micro-organisms. The inference is also that if the liquid contents were suitable for growth, then original contaminants might multiply in the liquid, thus posing a potential health risk. The only research that I have been able to find is a single instance of testing of one used, and one unused Ruyan cartridge for aerobic, anaerobic, and Legionella micro-organisms. As none were found, the author's conclusion was that 'there is no inherent tendency in the design of the Ruyan e-cigarette towards contamination from growth of organisms in the cartridge liquid'. (Ruyan Cartridge Report 21 Oct 2008 (section 4.2), available on-line via healthnz.co.nz/ecigarette).
  2. The liquid is often going into a bottle anyway! I have no experience with this (yet - my Wicked Liquid is on the way!), but it nevertheless seems sensible to minimise re-use of syringes and needles, especially where sticky substances are involved - they're nice & cheap - just be careful with needle disposal!
FYI, I found some interesting research regarding trying PG mist as a possible anti-bacterial, and anti-viral agent! (From the 1940s - distributed into the air supply of hospital wards).

FYI:
I understand that 'drugs paraphernalia' are in themselves illegal in some States in the US - which would typically include needles and syringes. Maybe someone knowledgeable in such affairs would comment on this, although common-sense leads me to suspect that a demonstrable, legitimate reason for posession would at least offer some mitigation in a sticky situation!

Good idea about the veterinary syringes - the few I've seen had needles that were relatively blunt, although most of the syringes were a bit small....

Holding upside-down: as jpc815 said, this is primarily to keep air bubbles near the top (mainly for dosing reasons, unless working in paediatrics) - so it's not really applicable. Bear in mind that a lot of techniques you might see healthcare professionals use are because e.g. containers might be sealed (air pressure problems), or emptying an ampoule upside-down (if the syringe isn't long enough/you need to get every last drop out). Just use what works for you (whilst trying not to stab anyone) - it's not rocket science!

Sorry for the long post - just trying to give something back to such a helpful site!

Have had mixed results "topping up" as the liquid doesn't travel very far down into the stuffing in any reasonable amount of time. Today I tried something new:

Pull out the stuffing from a smoked out cart with tweezers, clean it by running hot water over it while squeezing a few times, then lay it on a towel and pat dry.

Set up the empty cart in a holder of your choice...I just drilled some half inch holes in a short length of 2 x 2 (didn't have any styrofoam)...then put 30 drops of liquid in it (this is for a pen style cart - Njoy). The cart will be about 80% full.

Reinsert the stuffing slowly with tweezers. The liquid does not overflow!! Take care to have the stuffing flush with the end of the cart - not sticking out or too far down in.

Then "top-up" - I consistently needed another 7-8 drops.

Put the silicone seal on, put the cap on, then put in a holder with mouthpiece end down.

I find this technique easier than messing with a syringe, and less messy than soaking...and my kit looks a lot less suspicious ;-) Filling 7 carts in this manner took just under 10 ml. of Janty's juice. At one cart per day consumption I think I can vape for just over a dollar a day.

HUH??? Holes in what?

I wasted a lot of e-liquid before I wised up. I hate needles, so I picked up a few small test tubes with stoppers. When I refill, I drip e-liquid into the tube, insert the cartridge material and put the stopper on. For me, 10 - 15 drops of liquid is enough to soak a clean, dry cart. I flip it over a few times to saturate, then use tweezers to get it out. If I squeeze the material a little while removing it, the excess juice runs back into the tube. The material is pretty easy to get back into the cart with the tweezers. I just put the stopper back on the tube to save any leftover juice for the next cart.

I didn't get this from any post or advice. Just my overactive imagination and a real need to conserve as much e-liquid as possible after making a horrible mess of everything. My first bottle of e-liquid went really, really fast - most of it on the desk, my fingers and clothing. I'll let you know if I ever figure out a way to smoke my trousers... Hehe.

I think it's a pretty good (safe) method, but would appreciate any feedback or criticism. The way I do it now, I must look like a mad scientist about to invent a new form of life!

I'm so glad that I found this forum! A co-worker told me about seeing a kiosk in a mall (most likely the nefarious company). The idea intrigued me as I've been working on cutting down the amount I smoke.

I appeciate the alternative methods for refilling the cartridges - I have a feeling that I'd mess up with needles.

I was lost for a while with some of the e-cig terminology (a new set of buzzwords I'll have to learn - not to worry tho, I'll soon be vaping with y'all). I'm still not clear on the definition of dripping instead of vaping.

Welcome Anoel,

You'll learn as we all do by asking and spending time looking around the forum. That's what the forum is here for.

I don't care what anyone says, believe me, you don't want to drip. It's not good for your body and atomizer.

Dripping is where you drip juice, liquid PG or VG, into the atomizer for a stronger hit or high as some call it. Too much nicotine is dangerous and you'd have to be educated on amounts/measurements. Not only does the distributor of your e-cig tells you not to because it can/will damage the atomizer, but others have talked of damaging theirs by dripping.

No offense drippers, this is how I feel and newbies should be warned about doing something they don't know about and what it can do. :p
You know I luvs ya anyway.

What you do Anoel, it up to you. Just a bit of FYI.

Also, scroll down to what Mojo for some general FYI.

Vaping is what esmokers do (because vapor is released as opposed to smoke). Dripping is putting some drops of eliquid directly on the atomizer and smoking it either with the cartridge in the mouthpiece or with just the mouthpiece alone.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion but there are several "veterans" here who have been dripping for several months with no adverse effects. I have seen no proof that dripping is physically harmful. And their atomizers are no more damaged than those who don't drip. There are distributors who tell you it is okay to drip on the atomizers too.

You may also come across the term "topping off" which means putting a few drops of liquid on a cartridge that is getting dry. You can also fill a cartridge that has no liquid with a dropper if you don't like needles.

Hope this helps.

I'm not trying to seem like a know it all.:p

I'm just one on the careful side. Newbies should be. This is all new to us.

Sorry Bug but it's a pet peeve of mine when people make definitive statements without proof. None of us really know for certain the long term effects of any aspect of esmoking....say 5 or 10 years down the road. It's all a chance we're taking. And I don't think there's anything wrong with telling newbs or anyone that because I would say that is a fact....we don't know.

You make the above statement sound like a fact when it's merely your speculation....or perhaps your opinion. If stated as such, newbs could then take it as that and see for themselves that most here probably would not support those allegations.

Sorry, but I am an investigator by trade. Facts, not speculation, are what actually prove a point.

You are correct Lu and I stand corrected. I try to use the first person. So I would like to apologize and say "I" would would never".

And yes, it is only MY opinion.

Thanks Lu.:)
