Mech newb question -

I see videos where OP are screwing a hybrid adapter into a mech that has a 510 connection.

What's a hybrid adapter do? What's it for?

If I bought a mod that had one (the Infinite Stingray X is on the wishlist), is there anything I would need to be careful with/watch out for if I was using it with a hybrid adapter?

Thanks in advance :)- none of these darn reviewers say WHY they use that little brass ring!

The promoted benefits of a hybrid adapter are; less voltage drop caused by a floating pin in the standard top cap, and, a slightly lessened overall length when assembled with your chosen topper. Extra care must then be taken to prevent unwanted firing which the pin in the standard top cap usually helps you avoid. Depending on the device and your specific battery it is also possible that battery to center pin of you atty connection will require some adjustment.

What he said

You have to be careful with the adaptors, many attys don't have adjustable 510 pins and they can't be used.

The idea behind the adaptor was to also gain the very sleek one piece look of the true hybrid mods

The pin inside the 510 of the Atty MUST extend lower then the threaded outside part or you will cause a short.

I agree with everything that's already been said concerning the atty's that can be used with the hybrid adapter . I can give you some specifics regarding an Hcigar Stingray X clone that I have that should closely match what you can expect from the Infinite version . Using an atty with a 1 ohm coil and a Sony vtc 4 battery I measured a voltage drop of .09 using the regular 510 topcap . Using the hybrid adapter resulted in a voltage drop of .03 . Percentage wise in terms of the drop itself the difference is huge but in practical terms it's only six hundredths of a volt difference , not anyways near making a noticeable difference . Now this is only in regard to a Stingray X , using a hybrid adapter on other mechs may make a noticeable difference . I do use the hybrid adapter because my Rose V2 in all metal mode looks badazz connected to the Stingray X with it . :)

The differences will become more and more measurable as coil resistance drops and amperage increases. This is why the hybrid top copper mods are such a hit

The interesting thing is the drop didn't increase considerably and the variance stayed consistent when switching to an atty wit a .36 dual coil build , but that could be accounted for as a difference in conductivity between a Kayfun and an Aqua V2 . I did a juggling act with my DMM to verify results with the Kayfun ( need alligator clip leads :) ) but I haven't gotten around to verifying the Aqua . It's fun to play with , I need to compare some other atty's as well . The .36 build is the lowest I've built so far but I would expect the margins would widen considerably going lower than that .

1: the "hybrid look" adapter is a M2?x?Male-to-510Female thread adapter.
You screw your 510 thread topper into the adapter, and screw the adapter into the mod.
    It has no centerpin.

You have to be carefull that you use a topper that has a centerpin that sticks out.

    I advise against using them.
In general it's a recipe for disaster, and the flood of such setups being using by tomdickharryandsally are going to increase the statistics of battery vent/explosion incidents.

    2: why:
it makes your mod half inch shorter.

In my experience hybriding has a negligible effect on voltage drop, as long as the atty-mod connection is otherwise good. How clean all connection points are and the quality (internal resistance) of the battery is much more important. Internal resistance is definitely a factor that's neglected far to often in these discussions.

Just shows the mods themselves getting better at conductivity across all the connections and threads maybe?

I know some of the early mods were rough. Some cases you could see .2-.3v
I'd wager that it's more about the measurements being off. The materials and the connections are less of a factor than the battery itself (the internal resistance).

I get a .5 drop on my 26650 Panzer with the Kayfun , definitely illustrates the difference between copper and Stainless .

My measurements are consistent in regards to the Stingray X clone voltage drop tests I've seen on youtube and I verified the results the inline meter gave me using my DMM so I know the results I got with the Kayfun are accurate , since it's the same battery and mech being used the only variable was the difference in atty's and the resistance of the build , if there is a discrepancy between the inline meter and the DMM in regards to the Aqua I will post it in this forum .

Wow. That was REALLY helpful, Retic! Thank you! I'm thinking that 1) since the lowest build I'm comfortable vaping on is .5 ohms and 2) the voltage drop comparison using the hybrid adapter vs. not using it seems to be pretty negligible because I'm not super-subohming and 3) I don't really care if the mod is a half inch shorter and 4) the 510 pin on some of my attys is non-adjustable. I could see me zoning out and forgetting the adapter's on there. (I'm not dumb; just preoccupied ;)

that the hybrid adapter will stay in the box. I'll probably try it once, though, just to see if there's a difference in flavor.

At least I'll know WTH I'm doing!
    You guys are great!

If you do decide to try the hybrid adapter besides making sure your 510 pin is protruding past the threading of your atty , you should always screw the adapter all the way on to your atty first then screw it in to the mech all the way before installing your battery , then install your battery and adjust for battery rattle using your switch .

    Wait.

So, if I use the hybrid adapter, I take out the firing pin (the one at the top of my Nemesis) first?

    that's correct; the hybrid-look adapater is used instead of the topcap;
it screws down inside the tube; and you end up with no center pin

you rely on the tank's centerpin to contact the top of the battery; but when you do that, you are also putting the negative contact closer to the positive of the battery.

    Ooooooo scary innit?

Yup works fine for years now but this lack of common knowledge is why we recently have people with mods going into meltdown using attys with recessed pins
