I used to grow mushrooms. As a result, I have hypodermic needles. (The spores to grow mushrooms are sent inside the needles, for easy injection into the prepared "soil".) They've been cleaned and pasteurized, so I'm not worried about any of the 'shroom stuff overlapping...

I've used e-cigs for a month or so, and just ordered my first Riva 510 kit, and plan to quit analog smokes completely.

So... I've watched the videos on refilling cartomizers. (Haven't found one on filling cartridges...)

As far as I can tell, even with the videos using hypodermics, none of them give me a clue as to how much of the fluid I should use. It tends to be more of a "Well, move the needle this much while filling, but don't overfill" without giving out quantities.

All of the videos I've seen filling otherwise tend to refer to the number of drops to add to the cartridge/cartomizer. Drops vary wildly in size. And I've seen anything from 8-25 drops recommended.

Does anyone here have a "hard figure" on the amount of fluid to add in a format like milliliters or something similar? Thanks in advance, Krikket

Hello and welcome. When you buy the cartomizers from a vendor, in the description of the product, they alway list what it holds. ie .8ml 1ml .2ml etc. Get some 1 ml syringes,(these fit most bottles) and they are marked.

ps what type of cartomizers were you considering? the ce2's, I use a 20 guage and an 18 guage for an ego mega cartomizer.

You need to know the capacity of the cartos you have. A standard Boge carto is about 1ml. I don't use a syringe to fill them. but some people like to stick a sharp syringe down between the stuffing and the inner metal wall then pressing in juice as they withdraw the syringe. Don't stick it elsewhere in the stuffing - there are necessary wires and wicks in there.

And when you fill a new stuffing-type carto you need to let it lay on different sides until you are confident every bit of stuffing has absorbed juice. Otherwise you can singe the carto and ruin it. And the thicker your jucie is the longer you may need to wait before using the carto. I use 70pg/30vg and 80pg/20vg juices and usually 15 minutes laying the carto on different sides is enough. Also clean the carto up well. If there is a central air channel then I blow into the threaded end to clear it of juice (I want to see light through it). I sop up any loose juice above the stuffing.

Reservoir cartos - you need to use the kind of syringe it asks for. Joytech wants a sharp of a particular gauge. CE2 and Clearomizer/Fluxomizer want blunt in some gauge range or the special flexible tip filling kit. etc.

cartridge - until it looks moist but not a puddle on top. Overfill and it will end up in your mouth. When you get mad at the white stuffing, toss it and try precut blue foam for 510 carts from strictlyejuice.com.

Different carts, cartos, tanks will hold different amounts but for the most part you don't have to think about that when filling, just fill it till it's full in most cases.

In the case of a standard cart that comes with the Riva and other kits, they hold around 12 drops if I remember correctly but that's going to vary also with the juice, bottle your filling with, etc. Just fill it till it's full giving the drops time to soak in and when when you get a glassy almost bublish look of liquid on top you're done.

I am not sure what it is I did? But I have been dripping right into the individual carts. A little VP, a little e-juice, then a few drops of various flavors (Lorann candy flavs.) At first it was awesome, then I must have vaped too much because on some carts, the fill fibers might scorch, some didnt. But now most everything vaped has a similar burn taste.. One of my attys stopped working all together. I am wondering if I am adding too much juice? If it dripps out from the bottom, can it go down into the battery? I blow thru the atty, cover the bottom hole and the small hole on the threads is open... I am assuming cleaning the atty, and cart fiber in alchol it might work?? any ideas??

it is easy to overdo it and the darker and sweeter flavors can themselves burn (think hot sugar--first it caramelizes then turns to charcol) and gunk the atomizer or coil even before the filling gets a chance to burn. If you have an auto battery (the kind that works without a switch) you are at risk of wrecking the battery too.

This only applies to cartomizers (as far as I know) because I haven't used the atty/cartridge combination and have no experience with them.

Here's a link to a youtube video that demonstrates the "condom" method of filling the 510:
YouTube - Filling 510 Cartomizers

I've only been vaping for about 3 mos but I've mostly used the 510 cartomizers. I find the condom method above to be about the easiest method but it's still my least favorite because it floods the center tube and you can get juice in your mouth when you draw on it if you don't blow out the excess juice first, which seems like a waste.

The two methods that I prefer are:
1) use a bent paper clip to pull the donut-hole mouthpiece out of the "drawing" end of the cart. Inside, you'll see a tube in the middle of the cylinder and the tube is surrounded by batting. Using a dropper bottle or syringe, drip juice until you see it slightly pool at the top of the batting. Usually takes about 8 or 10 drops from the dropper bottle I use. You can then shake it down (same motion as shaking down an analog medical thermometer) about 15-20 shakes which will give you room for another 6 or 8 drops of juice.
2) With the cart removed from the battery, drip juice (slowly) into the battery end of the cartomizer. It's quick and easy. I just heard about it and tried it for the first time tonight. I only put in 8 drops but it seemed to vape really good for quite awhile. Unless I detect a problem with this, I'll probably continue with that method since it doesn't require any disassembly.

Happy vaping!
