I feel what is the most important is the fact that this is helping people quit smoking analogs and we're all really concerned Big Brother is going to ruin this for all of us and force a lot of people back to the analogs. This really is a better alternative to smoking analogs and we don't want to lose the right to enjoy it.

I feel that this new technology will make a huge difference in the lives of those who smoke. It has come too late for some, God rest them, but it's a second chance at life or longer lives for the rest of us.
If e-cigarettes prove to be the solution for weaning my husband and I off cigarettes, it will worth every dime I have put into it. Even if it only reduces the amount we smoke in the long run, it's still worth it.
What is the most important thing for me is keeping my husband alive.

I think also mentioning how many of us testify to feeling better! Since we can not make the claim to it being healthier, we feel healthier. Maybe also include the other benefits such as no stinky clothes, loosing our beloved smokers hack, smelling things again, no cigarette breath, etc.

Anyway, just my 2 cents and good luck!

I totally agree with Angela, try to stay away from the quit smoking angle and instead focus on all the positive effects people have reported on this forum.

I would also recommend contacting TropicalBob. He has a career's worth of experience as a reporter for the St. Pete Times on top of being a major advocate for e-cigs so his advice could be invaluable for what your article.

A couple of points:

First check out this article (the 2nd one) by Dr Seigel who is long time anti-smoking advocate who supports PV's (personal vaporizers)

The Rest of the Story: Tobacco News Analysis and Commentary

2. I would contact Bill Godshall who is head of the PA Harm Reduction Project who is against smoking buts sees the promise of PV's.

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/campaigning/11261-message-bill-godshall-tobaccofree-org.html

3. Here is a brief interview with a professor doing a study of PV's.

Daily Planet : May 05, 2009

4. A good article from the LA Times:

The Rest of the Story: Tobacco News Analysis and Commentary: Electronic Cigarettes the Feature of Los Angeles Times Article

5. Here is a very good letter from a staffer in Congress:

TheHill.com - Don?t snuff out e-cigarettes, my only solution to smoking

6. You basically are going to have to make "counter-points" to some silly comments by the anti-smoking fanatics. One point I would make is that all of the indregients in PV liquid has been approved separately by the FDA for human consumption: nicotine, PG/VG, water and flavoring.

7. I would state that most people who vape, welcome comprehensive testing by independent researchers here in the US. But that banning the use of PV's by adults during the 5-10 years that testing will be done is "damning" users to return to a product that we know for a fact is very deadly.

8. Anyone who states that there are other NRT methods to stop smoking, remind them that these other products (gum, patches, etc) have a 93% failure rate. If a doctor said to you here is a product I want you to spend your money on to treat your condition but by the way it has a 93% failure rate in successfully treating your condition, what would your response be?

9. Anyone who states that PV's are marketed to "kids" because the juice comes in flavors such as chocolate, point out to them that Nic Gum comes in nice flavors such as orange, costs about $10 instead of $100, is sold over the counter on a shelf just like candy, is availbable to anyone and oh, by the way it is GUM which kids love!

10. You might want to check Ruyan's site for the study they had commissoned by a New Zealand testing facility that showed that what is emited from a PV is water vapor and has no negative effects on humans.

Good Luck

Make sure you point out some of the 'cons' of vaping, as well....the learning curve, shipping times, equipment issues, etc.....not to paint too rosy a picture of the PV's. People need to be educated on the issues with our gizmo's, not just the benefits.

These are also great arguements to the "what about the children" issue.

I would suggest that you emphasise the 'smoking alternative' aspect, rather than saying 'quit smoking', so as to distance e-cigs from NRTs.

Best of Luck! (and I hope you'll let us read the finished artcle ;))

THis is a good point, but I would include the experience that a number of people have had (me included) that they bought the kit with the intention of being able to smoke in bars/hotels/their house etc. and being able to save money (yeah right) and ended up being accidental quitters. It seems to me that lots of people claim to have bought their e-cig for other reasons and found out that they smoked fewer cigarettes until they just switched over. I didn't intend to quit until I realized that in the first week and a half I had gone from a pack and a half a day to about a pack a week. It was only then that I decided to quit.
