I got an apology while vaping in a store.

I've been using my 5 volt nicostick pretty exclusively for a few weeks. One huge plus about this, is there is no way a small black box can be mistaken for a cigarette.

So the other day, I'm waiting for a friend in line at the grocery store, and without even thinking about it, I took a few hits. Just at that moment the Asst Mgr came around the corner, saw the vapor, and very nicely said, "You can't do that in here". I held up the nicostick and casually replied, "Oh I apologize, but it's not a cigarette, it's actually an electronic vaporizer." Then I took a quick puff to show her. She smiled and said, "Ok, sorry about that." Then she went about her business. :)

My first thought would be that she may have assumed you may have been referring to some sort of medical device, but either way you were courteous with your response and that could can go a long way also.

At this place in time where our PV's are just beginning to emerge, all we can do is be courteous and try and explain exactly what it is we are doing. We must remember that any owner/manager can ask us not to vape at any time in their establishment and we must either oblige them or leave the premises.

With the success it has getting people off tobacco and breathing well again you would think it would be a medical device, my MD thinks they are the best thing to get his patients off cigarettes. I can remember when you had to have a prescription to get patches and they didn't work anywhere near what the PV does. I think the government is getting aggravated that we won't be dying right at the age for retirement from smoking tobacco. If you think about it, that is the perfect scenario for the government to keep all our money.

I think the best policy is to NOT use a PV in an enclosed public place. Take it outside. Having a good argument for the doing of something doesn't necessarily justify the doing of it. You know that folks are going on point when they see someone "smoking" indoors. Do you really need all that attention?

I don't think it was intentional
and without even thinking about it, I took a few hits.
I read it as Ez wasn't thinking & took a puff before realising where he was.

& what about bers, pubs etc that allow it? Do you suggest that we still go outside with the smokers?

That's a good question. First let me say I don't believe anyone could vape in a grocery store without thinking, any more than one could light up a cigarette in a grocery store without thinking.

Okay, I have a double standard regarding vaping in public. I vape in outdoor eating areas and bars that tolerate it. I don't vape anywhere I'm certain it would make some folks uncomfortable. I don't think that vaping is worth a confrontation for the sake of evangelizing.

This is a respectable point of view, but you should consider the implications of "...Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak for me."

I live in a state with an indoor smoking ban, and when its 18 degrees and windy, being able to use an e-cigarette indoors is a nice incentive to stop smoking! It's not about evangelizing, its about making sure ridiculous violations of reason like an indoor vaping ban in the name of "clean air" in New Jersey.

I'm with you on not vaping where it would make people uncomfortable, but the OP was not trying to evangelize--he was simply enjoying the freedom to use a smoke-free product indoors. Personally, I would probably not use chew tobacco in church*, but that doesn't mean I would be averse to someone using snus or an e-cig in a grocery store.

*Granted, I don't like chewing tobacco anyway, but as disgusting as I may think it is...I wouldn't begrudge anyone for doing it in front of me. For the record, I have "stealth vaped" in a very conservative church...but considering that I've drank and smoked with more "progressive" pastors, it might not be all that shocking. ;)

Well, I can kind of prove you wrong there straight away.

Just last week my other half carried on vaping when we walked into a supermarket. She only realised when we'd gotten as far as the fruit & veg. Totally inadvertent, she just wasn't thinking about what she was doing.

I've done similar, taken my EVO out of my pocket & had a drag on it before I realised where I was (a bank). I held that one in as long as I could & nobody even noticed (thankfully)

I've done it. As a matter of fact I did it when I used to smoke too.
I was working in a video store and was the only clerk working that shift. I just checked out some customers and the store was finally empty for a moment..I could finally get my quick ciggy break in. I didn't realize that while I was "thinking" ciggy break, I was actually lighting up a cigarette right in the middle of the store, behind the counter, on camera...
I stood there taking in 2 long drags, then it hit me...Oh crap!
My manager saw it the next day and he was laughing his .... off. Said my reaction was the funniest thing he'd ever seen. he said he was all set to be mad when he realized by my reaction that I was on auto pilot and didn't realize that I'd lit up in the store.
Talk about "mind control", lol. :p

In a local pub in virginia the other night I was puffing on my Super6. The bartender said I couldn't smoke, and I said "I'm not smoking, this is just a nicotine inhaler. No fire." And he's like, "oh, is that an electronic cigarette? because those aren't allowed either". And I said "Does it look like a cigarette?". A little while later one of the servers nudged the bartender and pointed at me. He said "That's just a nicotine inhaler" and she was like "oh".

So there you have it. Apparently nicotine inhalers are perfectly fine and not effected by the smoking ban in Virginia.

Which is exactly why, if ever asked or confronted, I politely say it's an electronic vaporizer. Harder to do if you're using a stock e-cig though.
btw Zofryer, I love how you answered his question, with a question, to throw him off guard. ;)

"Nicotine Inhaler"... Hmmm. That's an interesting term and especially from the fact that it was an excepted term. I personally don't care for the term "e-cig" or "electronic cigarette" for the simple fact that other than appearing/performing like a cigarette, it is in no way the same.

That appears to be the hardest and most important thing to make the public understand is that the real difference between smoking a vaping is like the difference between driving a monster truck versus driving a Prius, or using solar power versus #2 fuel oil, or just plain comparing apples to oranges.

I'm also reducing my carbon footprint in this world just as I have with the purchase and use of my pellet stove in my own home. At times I get really frustrated with those who rush-to-judgment, those who have that "mightier-than-thou" attitude.

I'm trying my best to let everyone I meet know that my Personal Vaporizer (or as you say - Nicotine Inhaler) is in no way the same as or related to a cigarette in any way other than providing me the nicotine I need AND WANT. There are no laws that make me an illegal drug user while vaping.

I was at Mustard Seed last night eating with my family. I asked the waitress what their policy on "personal vaporizors" was and she didn't really know much about them but just asked if they leave an odor. I said "no" considering I wasn't going to blow it in anyones face. :p

I told her that I could show here and she said "ok." I showed her and the manager came over and I told both of them about how it worked.

The manager said it was ok and wanted one for her son, and the waitress wanted one for herself. So I gave them information and happily vaped the rest of my time there.

Most places I have gone have not cared if I use it. Most want one for themselves or family members. I carry cards to give out to those people. I did however find one restaruant that said they had a corporate policy against the use of them in the restaruant.:(
