I'd recommend a coilmaster kit or at least a jig if you want wrap your own wire. Also you really need to devote some time to steam-engine.org, especially if you want more exotic builds. The benefits of using one wire is that it will require less wattage to heat up than an exotic build and it's a lot easier to "find your sweet spot" as it were. There's nothing WRONG with exotic builds or wire, but then you'd also need to use the heat flux part of steam-engine.org as you're also looking at TOTAL mass in a build and that can affect things a fair amount.
I started with my own coils and simple round builds. Experiments were easier because I was only dealing with ONE factor. I also use single coil RTAs (but I am a MTL vaper) and so it's a lot easier than trying to wrap parallel wires that are identical and then mounting two and etc. (it will also halve your resistance, while increasing wire mass, which may ULTIMATELY wind up being something you want, but I would experiment with single round wires if it were me.
Best of luck, and yes there is no single "right" build for any RTA, in fact it's very individual to the person. Some decks really DEMAND a smaller diameter wire, and it's something you also need to calculate out in steam-engine, as diameter of the wire also plays a role as far as targeting resistance. Different build decks often work better with different diameter wires, not to mention coil placement, wicking technique.
I'm afraid there is a lot to learn, but I'm sure you can do it.
