I'm seriously so upset and ...... at myself and my life right now!!! My mom's best friend is gone, and my buddy. My compadre is gone. I sat down to finally order my Vtube and some new juices and my dog, Derk, was laying next to the couch. I stopped what I was doing and put him outside and came back to the laptop to finish. When I went to bring him back in, it was taking him oddly, a long time to respond or come up on the porch. So I shouted his name again... Finally I see him running up from OUTSIDE of his pen!! So I say "DERK!! Your OUTSIDE!? Get over here big boy, c'mon!!" and he comes over, I grab him by the collar. I can't pull him over the fence door so I start to put my leg over to bring him in through the front door. Unfortunately, his collar sliped off at this point, and as soon as he realized this, he bolted.

Gone. My dog is gone. He was running 15 miles an hour into the woods.. And hes long, long gone. I want to cry.
This sucks, so bad. Anyone else ever lose a dog or pet like this? This is horrible. :( The worst part is, he isn't really my dog. Hes my brother's dog, and when my brother finds out, he might as well fall to his knees and sob because I KNOW that thats how he will feel on the inside. I feel horrible and I don't know what to do other than vent. :( Please come home Derk...

To me "pets" are family so I understand your loss but I'm seeing a key, or at least reason here in what you said that I've quoted.
Dogs are fiercely loyal to whom they are attached to the point of distraction regardless of how you feel towards the dog. Don't project your feelings on to Derk. Dogs are individuals too. I'm only guessing and I know this isn't much help beyond understanding motive.
I sincerely wish you the best.
Where is your brother?
It could be that Derk got emotionally triggered somehow and is now frantically looking everywhere for your brother.
He really needs to be involved in finding him if possible.

My brother lives at the edges of the state, and I live in the middle. Derk was brought to us to protect us after a series of break-ins and window smashes. My house was being fiddled with, our basement windows were being kicked in and taken out. Finally, we were robbed for all of our food. After that, our front picture window was smashed by a rock. We think it was a homeless man, because they stole food. Derk is a Rottweiler, the runt of his litter, but a very smart and loyal Rottweiler. He barks whenever the papergirl comes, he barks whenever someone turns around in our driveway. We haven't had a break-in since. We spotted him briefly in our back yard about 30 minutes ago, before bolting off. So, we have hope that he will be coming back when hungry. I was thinking that it had something to do with missing my brother too. Idk. I just hope nothing happens to him. I think he can hold his own. Its light out now, which is a good thing.

I feel for you my friend. My "Sage", my BEST FRIEND, took off a few times and I was so f'ed up.....but luckily I found him both times...once at Wal-Mart,ya Wal-Mart and the second time he was sitting by the door when I came home from looking for him.

Just dont stop looking, and be sure to come home every half hour or so, in case he finds his way back.... Also, I had Sage "chipped by Home Again just in case.

Good luck I SOOOOO hope you get him back !!

Again I see a disconnect.
Animals are not really objects to do "our will" however good at subjecting them we are without an emotional contract of some sort... Or, ... forced coercion - fear, withholding of affection (pack ostracism), food control, beatings etc. (not that you would do this) this occurs in nature also.
"Derk was brought to us to protect us after a series of break-ins" ...doesn't make him yours.

He "belongs" (maybe) to your brother by primal and emotional bond. As much as Derk may feel about yourself and himself as belonging to the same "pack", which he is bound by instinct to protect, his Alpha pack leader, his "blood liege", may very well be your brother.

I'm not meaning this to be "the" answer, just something to consider that I see you've been lacking in trying to "psychically" track him and more accurately determine his whereabouts, if you get my drift.
Of course you can always put up posters: "Help. Lost Rottweiler. Answers to "Derk" or whatever.
I'd do that anyway.

I hope this is helpful and I hope that you let your brother know the situation soon, if he's in a position to deal with it.

Why don't you go out to the woods and look for him? when one of my dogs runs away every so often I go out walking around or even driving around till i find him, sometimes for hours. Dogs will do that if you let them but they only having fun, they will actually look for the way back eventually and if you there to call their name and help them find the way home they will be happy. I don't think anybody will snatch a Rottweiler.

hope you find him.

Well I mean I did go out and look for him into the woods with my flashlight but it was pitch black out there and my flashlight only threw a little 10 foot beam. I listened for him and couldn't hear anything. We went out in the car around the block and up the street, which is the street behind my pond, and I got out and listened for him in all the little side road ditches I know of. I called from my window for an hour after that, and then every 20-30min or so after that, but I guess I lost hope. I've never lost any of my past dogs and everyone told me he was gone for good so I believed them... Since then we've spotted him in our yard so he is staying nearby. My brother did beat him. (at least I believe my brother beat him. I have only witnessed it once) We try to treat him very well and I think he cares about us a lot. We have had him for a good while now and he fits in well. Its now 8:30AM and we lost him around 1am so hes been out there around seven hours now. I have all the supplies to make posters in front of me. We keep checking the yard, I'm hoping he will show up.

If he hasn't come back today you are going to have to put up signs. I got my dobie back using signs. Also, if you have a local animal control, check it. Even go down there and make SURE he hasn't been picked up.

And let us know when you find him. I'm going to be worrying about Derk until he makes it home.

he wouldn't come when I would call with stress in my voice, he finally came to me when I tried sounding like I wanted to play. I had tried that when he first ran off but I guess he was too far to hear it at that point. I'm so happy we got him back. hes laying in his new bed we just got him lol. Good morning everyone. :D

i hope all turns out well for ya.. Our dog likes to escape from time to time. He always comes back, he will never come to us when we call or chase him. We watch for him late at night and he will come and sleep on the front porch and we will lure him through the front door with food. The back yard is fenced and he wont come in through the back but the front door he feels like he is getting some thing special but we just bring him through the house and right out to the back yard. Our old dog use to do the same thing and we could only catch him with the truck. He loved riding in the truck so when he would get out i would ride around the neighborhood in the truck and when i would find him i would drop the tailgate and he would jump right in after i got back in the truck and of course we would come straight home.. Although dogs are very smart they are not as smart as we (humans) are, we just have to find out the best way to out smart them and use their weaknesses againt them, IMO. Good luck and i hope you get him back soon..
