Just got back from the emergency vet a couple of hours ago. My 13 year old buddy Chopper had been sick for a couple of days and wasn't showing signs of improving. Turns out his kidneys were giving out and he would have had to gone through a 3 day hospital stay and a couple months of daily treatment and then multiple kidney treatments weekly for the rest of his life for a 50/50 shot. For a dog with really bad chronic arthritis that was just too much for him to go through. We only adopted him about 9 months ago, and he was supposed to be put down a few times before (honestly it was a miracle he made it out of animal control), so the old man was playing on house money.
RIP Chopper
I didn't think it would be this hard for a dog I've only had for nine months, but it's funny how quickly you get attached to them.
I am taking some comfort in the fact that he did have a great 'retirement' with us and lived a very plush life for a while after an obviously hard life, but man this is tough. I'm sad for selfish reasons b/c I miss him, not b/c I feel like his life got cut short or anything like that.
