Hi, I've had my ProVari mini for a couple of weeks now and today I just got around to reading the instruction manual. I read the warning that you should not use your ProVari without an atomizer. Being the dufus that I am I have done things like checked my battery level without a tank on it. She still works like shes supposed to but since I've abused my Provari should I have anything to worry about?

Well, dang! I often check the battery level without a topper. I need to know if the battery came off the charger fully charged or something's wonky. I imagine the instruction is because the ProVari fires to get a reading, but I don't hold the Cb button down for very long and I suspect it may not really fire anyway. I think it's just a precaution. Blemini Cricket is almost a year old and has given no indication she feels abused. Accordingly, I shall continue my life and pretend I never read this thread. It is, after all, a ProVari. If there was a problem it it wouldn't fire or would throw an error code.

It won't let you do something stupid

ETA: Please ignore the above post and read Ozwald's instead. I am used to living in oblivion, but realize it shouldn't be encouraged for others. It's common knowledge in the Ocelot world that we only listen to NPR and can't conceive of anything interesting members of the amateur radio world might have to say. Perhaps it's just something for them to do whilst snowed in.

Bob: This is Ice Station Zebra, are you there Snow Globe? over
Zack: Snow Gobe here; over
Bob: It's really snowing hard; over
Zack: Yep; over

Oh the thrills of the Back Country.

With the wattage we're running it's not that big of a concern, but 'dry-firing' a circuit without a load attached can and will damage the circuit. It's pretty much common knowledge in the amateur radio world & slightly less in the cb world - attempting to transmit without an antenna (which is nothing more than a 'coil' providing resistance to the circuit) will fry your radio. CB's are legally limited to 4w (AM) & with licensing the FCC allows 1500w for amateurs. In the radio world, even a brief click of the button is highly discouraged, but I know from accidental experience on a 5w handheld radio that it's not certain disaster. Back to the vaping world, I'm sure it's not going to cause devastating harm to a PV for occasional, brief clicks, but I still wouldn't recommend it. There's still a potential for damage, even on a Provari.

Edit: The damage is accumulative so if one were trying to test the Ao constantly without anything attached, I'd bet that you would eventually permanently damage the circuit. I don't have intimate knowledge of how they've wired the board, but you can't know the resistance without sending voltage to it, therefore you'd still be doing damage even if it could fire an error code for something like that.
