I didn't say anything about charting or ownership. And I did say "covered". Anyways, the above is what I remember hearing, albeit a loooong time ago.
Interesting. I've learned something tonight. Clearly they aren't the same song. The one you cite even has a different title. It's just a different song.

Just as obviously, Melaine's song was inspired by this one. Thanks for enlightening me.

In case you're interested, Teresa Brewer hit #1 with Music! Music! Music!, Freddy Martin hit #5, Carmen Cavallaro also #5, Ames Brothers #14, Hugo Winterhalter #17, Mickey Katz #18 ... all in 1950. That song was a much bigger hit than Melanie's Nickel Song was. But, I like Melanie anyway. :)

Uh, in case you're wondering ... I have a searchable data base with all charted songs which goes back a century. 8-o

Well, now I've learned something too. And it reminds me of something I wish more modern musicians would learn. Nobody creates in a vacuum. And yet, in the past few years, I've been hearing more accusations of plagiarism. Most, I think, get settled out of court, but some end up there. Except in severe rip-off cases, I think musicians ought to be happy they've inspired someone else.

And I can sure listen to Melanie more than Teresa Brewer!

I love Nick Drake, you might remember one of these songs from a recent cell phone commercial, and another from an older VW commercial. Too bad this guy died at such a young age (I believe he was about 26 or so). Very talented but here are the songs.. if you like these then you'll like pretty much everything else he has done.
