Days like today remind me why I'm so blasted happy to be a Texan.

College handgun bill clears first Senate vote

College students and faculty members with a concealed handgun license would be able to pack their firearms on campus under a bill that the Senate tentatively approved on Tuesday. The measure, passed on a 20-10 vote, was offered by a state senator who said he wants to give Texas students protection against mass shootings such as occurred at Virginia Tech University in 2007. Sen. Jeff Wentworth, R-San Antonio, said the right-to-carry measure also would protect students from other life-threatening situations.

"When I read about massacre in Virginia (in 2007), I felt I would feel personally guilty if it woke up one morning and read that this had happened on one of our college campuses and I had done nothing to prevent it from happening," Wentworth explained to other senators. A series of amendments seeking to soften the bill were rejected as Wentworth argued they would infringe on the rights of Texans licensed to carry. One amendment would have allowed college governing boards to decide whether to allow firearms on their campuses.

The measure, which needs a final vote in the Senate, faces an uphill battle in the House, which allowed a similar bill to die on its calendar last week. Higher education officials are expected to lobby against the measure, using the argument that it infringes on their authority and could endanger students and faculty. The Senate bill does not affect a current prohibition on firearms at sporting events.

Texas maybe the last place in the world to believe in SELF-DEFENCE. They worry about crimminal and kids getting guns, guess who is most apt to shoot of A** off?

Out of curiosity, why do you say that? Personally, I've always found Texas to have some very liberal laws about self-defense and the protection of property.

I guess I did not write that clear enough. Texas is the only place that allows us to defend ourselves. The rest of the world is too worried about criminals and kids getting guns to allow it citizens to have guns and carry guns.

Criminals are always going to get guns. Criminal are most apt to shoot me.

Kids have and will always get anything they want, guns, drugs, cigs, you name it, so why all this worry about kids getting things I don't understand. Parents are responsible for protecting and making sure that their children do not get these things.

Kids with guns in gangs are most apt to shoot me.

Banning guns and the carrying of guns will not change any of the above. All banning does is give the criminal a big advantage over law biding citizens

The ones that are against the College handgun bill do not understand just how hard is to get a CHL in the first place. And that the CHL holder is not the one to be feared.

‘‘Are we at last brought to such humiliating and debasing degradation, that we cannot be trusted with arms for our defense? ... If our defense be the real object of having those arms, in whose hands can they be trusted with more propriety, or equal safety to us, as in our own hands?’’
— Patrick Henry
Got to love the wisdom of those who came before us.

Here is just a little about what it takes to get a CHL (Concealed Handgun License).
  • Have to be at least 21 years of age.
  • Have never been convicted of a felony.
  • Have not had any class A or Class B Misdemeanors within the last 5 years
  • Cannot be a member of a gang, or be involved in gang related activities.
  • Do not owe any back Taxes or unpaid child support.
  • Are not under any protective/restraining orders.
  • Undergo very stringent criminal and mental background checks, run by the Texas DPS and the FBI.
  • Acquire and pass class room training in the laws pertaining the use of deadly force, Self Defense, and Concealed Carry. (10 hours minimum)
  • Pass a firearm proficiency test on an approved range.
This process takes on average 60 to 90 days, but many have reported it taking longer than 100 days.

Plus it is not cheap to get a CHL. Classes cost on average about $125 to $150. The application for the License is $140.00 for the average individual.

There are more details involved in getting a CHL, I have just listed some of the main requirements.

It is not the Licensed CHL holder that one needs to worry about. A criminal with the intent of doing harm, is not going to worry about being legal.

Statistics also show that areas with higher percentages of CHL holders also have lower crime rates. The last thing a crook wants to do is go up against someone who is armed.

People (Sheeple) think the police will protect them. It takes on average 15 to 20 minutes for the police to respond to a call, should you be able to call in the first place. It only takes a brief couple of minutes for a criminal to do you in.

The police cannot protect us, it is up to us to take responsibility for our own safety. Hence the saying, I carry a gun, because a cop is too heavy.

To put it all in a nutshell, Texas laws are very well written to allow us to legally and effectively defend ourselves.

Here are some other quotes that I like.

"How fortunate for governments that the people they govern don't think." -- Adolph Hitler

"When the government fears the people, you have liberty. When the people fear the government, you have Tyranny."--Thomas Jefferson

"It is the duty of the patriot to protect his country
from his government
