Yes, there are pretty decent free alternatives to MOST software. Even in windows there is a bunch of decent free software, just can be harder to find is all.
I agree to some extent about NewEgg, but Ive used TigerDirect long before NewEgg went Internet only and shut down their retail stores.

Here are my thoughts..
Netbook is ok but will not last you 8 years like the last one.. Almost all netbooks are using the ATOM processor which for a lack of better term is a mobile phone processor and cannot handle more than 2 apps running at once affectively. You would be better off spending a little more for a real laptop. If you don't mind spending a money I5 or I7 would be the way to go for long life. As for Office.. WHY spend the money unless you are going to use it for business. Use Open office with is free on source forge.

Dell has great support which for me is what is needed for most folks.. The lattitue 13 is a great little device and it doenst cost much.

Windows 7 runs well on 2GB of RAM. I would say you only need 4GB or more if you are a gamer or you run programs that require a good bit of power (video editing software and such)

GD, you can always transfer your programs too! There is a great program (can't think of the name ATM) that will move your stuff from one computer to another.
I'm gonna have to agree with gatherman. Netbooks just arent very powerful. For a little bit more money you can get a lot more laptop. Someone here offered me a used laptop and I'm waiting to hear back on the details.
Since I'll be on a limited income forever it's more important to find something that will last. It's different when you can look to the future and know that you'll have more money down the road. Not complaining just needing to be realistic and think long term. I take good care of the stuff I have and it lasts me a long time... like my car. So if I get a new computer I think I'm better off getting a laptop over a netbook.

Skip the word package.....I got ticked off at the 100 price tag for word and found OpenOffice.

P.S if you have Kids...there is Upromise too. I earned 35 bucks towards my kids college, buying a Dell last year.
Are you guys ready for this ... if I can type through the tears. candre23 just gave me a laptop!!! It's a 3 year old Compaq Presario V6107US that he is sending me at no obligation! I'm lost for words at this level of kindness and generosity, you guys.
I'm at a loss for words here and that rarely happens. Shoot, you have me in tears. You all should be very proud!
