I sent a private message to another member regarding the possible use of illegal substances by another adult and the words used were deleted in the message. What is the rationale there if the message is private?

They use the federal definition of privacy here. A "private" message is between you, the recipient, and the guy manning the wiretap.
Probably a filter set up to remove words automatically. You can't blame the site for this. There are rules in place everyone here agrees to when signing up. You don't like thier rules, you don't have to come here. No different than someone coming to your house. They have to respect your rules and the way you run things.
I made a post the other day about the "Smothers Brothers" in a "when did you realize you were old" thread and they blanked out Tommy's brother's first name!

Guy manning the wiretap? Surely not - there's No Such Agency which would stoop so low as to monitor your PMs
I found on various forums people think they have the freedom of speech. Most don't realize that they are visiting as a guest and must abide by the forum rules.
Hmmm, must have missed the discussion on the filtering of private messages in the Forum Rules....but thanks for pointing that out.
I think the reasoning is twofold.
Firstly, even though it is Private Messaging it may be unwanted by the recipient.
Secondly, they have to show that they are taking some sort of steps not to condone any sort of illegal acitivities (whether it's effective or not).
So we've got a server that's a prude, doesn't like drugs, and doesn't like the Smothers Brothers.
