The 4pin reg is the same pinout but adds a control pin which can be used or ignored. And you can avoid the pcb and solder right to the pins, that would be easier with 3 pins than 4.

So, one more curiosity question- What does the little 10 UF Cap do? What's it's job in there bridging those two pins?

Is this the reg you are using?

LDO 5 volt, 3.0 amp regulator with control pin!

If so from the spec sheet regarding your output capacitor:

• Co improves stability and transient response.(Co > 47μF)

I'd go with a 100uF and at least 10V cap.

Hopefully you can solder real well, soldering on those small pins requires a delicate and quick touch. You don't want to overheat the chip.

Hhhmmm....maybe I'd better get a board then.... or better yet, get all the parts together and pay somebody else to solder them.
I seriously haven't touched a soldering iron in over 5 years and had only soldered 2 or 3 times before that.

I'd go with with DenniZ's approach (just add the LED resistor) with the 3 pin TI, which I believe to be a better reg anyway. His guide is well laid out and should be easy to follow.

So did you just cut one end off, solder the wires together and plug the other end into the regulator? (That's the idea I'm getting from looking at that pic anyway....)

He doesn't put in any capacitors or resistors other than the one for the LED that you mentioned though.
Is that safe for the regulator?
I noticed mention of the 10 uf 10 amp capacitor a couple of times but still not sure where it would go in this one?
I'm guessing between the voltage out and the ground prongs?

I'm not waiting that long.

Basically, the resistor goes on the LED because as LEDs get hotter, they conduct better, and in the right circumstance they can go into what's called Thermal runaway and fry themselves. I've got the LED figured out. I just need to figure out where the cap and resistor would go on the 3 prong regulator. From what I read in DenniZ's thread, they said the TI regulator doesn't need a resistor but should still have a 10 uf 10 amp cap on it. Unfortunately, I didn't see anything about WHERE it should go. Not sure if it would be between the ground and voltage in or ground and voltage out.

Although, as soon as I get a PM back from Asdaq, I may be using his audio cable connector method with the 4 prong regulator from Mad Vapes. I don't want to wait another month for TI to get the 3 prong ones back in stock.

All that aside, the link is a great study on LEDs and looks like he has some other interesting stuff to read up on as well. More reading material for my late night insomnia!

BTW.... I gotta ask about your screen name. Are you affiliated with Hillshire? I work for the plant that does their Deli Select meats here in St. Joe.

Sorry, got distracted as I was reading this. Yes I did. If the cable only has 2 or 3 leads, you can move pins from the other unused side too. Also I used as much of the wiring from the cable as possible.

It's hard to see but the 480 resistor is on the back of the cable plug.

I'll throw one more question in just for fun....
If I want to do a power on LED, can I go from pos out on the box > resistor > LED > ground on the regulator?
