I think we need the FDA, I really do.

I've said this before, but you'd think that as simple as our ejuice is any serious problems would have been highlighted early on in 2009 when the FDA ran spectrographic analysis on samples. They detected trace levels of Nitrosamines in a couple of samples and trace levels of diethylene glycol in another. The rest were clean. If you Google "trace levels in food" you get all sort of hits for metals and pesticides.

I'm sure that not vaping is safer than cloud making and we'd all be better off if everything we consumed was of natural origin. Just the simple fact that vaping was the way I finally quit cigarettes for good without the nervousness and cravings I experienced when I tried to quit before makes it a desirable activity for me. The towel test tells me I'm not turning my lungs brown anymore. That's significant.

As a noob who is still trying to figure out what's safe and what's not I can relate to the feelings of the OP. It seems appealing to have someone put a stamp on a product and tell me it's safe. But given a choice I will always choose having a choice. The FDA is not going to give vapers anything that is worth what they will take away.

It's been more than five years since commercial introduction of ecigs. Tests have been performed and the results are typically benign. There's been time to discover any gotchas. Even the FDA tests showed only a couple of contaminated samples. We are told that USP ingredients are used in our juice and we hope that the metals in our mods and atomizers are lead free.

But, do we really know all of what we vape is completely safe? Naw, we don't. It's probably safe to say that it's magnitudes safer than tobacco cigarettes and that's enough for me at this point. I'd like to see a stamp of approval from FDA, CDC, and consumer safety organizations. Maybe Consumer Reports needs to take a swing at finding out what's in them. :)

We have certified auto mechanics, computer techs, tradesmen and such with no federal regulation.

You mean to tell me that there is an unregulated human activity out there? How is this possible? Well, I guess that those certifications are simply corrupt, purchased by "big whatever" and until the government inserts its vast collective wisdom, nothing will be safe and we are all going die.
