I have a question this morning. I was reading random stuff here on vaping and health concerns. I was actually looking for some information to set my mind at ease but came across information that alarms me a little. Before I ask my question I want to say what it was I was looking for. Since I am only one month into quitting stinkys and vaping yummies, I like many are experiencing some side effects that are sometimes difficult to separate from each other. My concern was that I seem to be experiencing things that don't seem typical so I wanted to see if I could find others that had similar effects. Sure, I have had some of the more typical effects of quitting smoking but the one that concerned me was a kind of tightness in my shoulder area. I don't know if I can properly describe this but I will do my best. I feel like I am very aware of my neck, collarbone and shoulders. They have a tingly, tight kind of sensation. Kind of like when stressed and that may be all it is, but I don't feel stressed. Actually for the first time in my life I feel really positive and good about quitting cigs. I don't think it is dehydration related because I drink a .... load of water during the day, always have. If this sounds familiar to anybody out there in vape land please give me some hope that this is normal.

Now my other question.... I have pain issues and use ibuprofen (too much I am sure) to keep it at bay. I don't know how to link what I found, but it had to do with interactions with vaping and ibuprofen. Do I need to find new otc pain med? These are things I didn't even think of when researching vaping.

If it's something that bothers you, see a doctor. Sometimes, a negative diagnosis after examination can restore your confidence. I haven't heard anyone talk about joint pain as being associated with vaping.

Ibuprofen is my drug of choice for pain and inflammation, but I have to take them few and far between. My doctor has me taking fish oil capsules for cholesterol and triglycerides. If I take Ibuprofen it thins my blood even more and I can get a bruise just by bumping something when I walk by.

Doctors, according to my RN OR nurse niece recommend alternating between Ibuprofen and Tylenol for balance in blood thinning, inflammation, and pain relief. Too much of either cause liver damage and other problems, but I'm just repeating what i've been told.

I agree with alternating ibuprofen and acetaminophen. I just set up my med box with alternating every night for hip pain that interrupts sleep. For serious pain, such as tooth extraction, you can alternate them every two hours, and usually avoid using heavy-duty meds.

As for that shoulder problem, nicotine is a short-acting muscle relaxant, with nasty rebound effects. So that is normal.

Thanks Dave. I agree that the best way to find out if there is any concerns is to see a doctor. Unfortunately I am part of that massive uninsured, living pay check to pay check just to survive group of people. I was just throwing it out there to see if I got any bites from others that had a similar experience but got over it. It is not a joint pain. I know this sounds funny but it is more like all of a sudden I am acutely aware of my shoulders, neck and right down both arms. Since nobody is sounding off I will assume I am special, hahahaha, and give it a bit to see if it gets better. Wasn't sure if it might be pg/vg related.
As for the balancing of ibu/Tylenol. I will give it a go. I understand the risks of daily ibuprofen ingestion, and am really trying to ween off of it, but when in pain it is very hard not to reach for the fastest relief. Thanks for your response. :)

Thanks to all that replied. If these odd things continue I will be a good doobie and go to a doctor. And oooops, sorry I posted in wrong spot.

Just a note: nicotine is not a muscle relaxant. It activates the same receptors that cause the muscle contractions involved in voluntary movement.

To get a better sense of possible interactions between vaping and ibuprofen, i'd suggest searching for nicotine and ibuprofen interactions. Anything that may be happening due to nicotine in vaping would likely have been reported for users of the patch and gum too.

I'm not a doctor and suggest you speak with one.

With that said, cigarettes contain MAIO's. E liquids do not. Check out the MAOI withdrawal symptoms. I believe this may explain the tingling. I experienced the same sensation.

Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) - Mayo Clinic

Thanks so much. I did read it and it sounds like this could be the culprit. All those years of smoking cigarettes with my head buried in the sands of denial. I did not want to know any more truth then I was forced to hear. I knew that they would most likely be the cause of my demise one day but I didn't want to really know just how bad they were. I understand the limb you are going out on by helping me to find a possible solution. It is appreciated and I know that seeing a doctor is the best if I have continued issues.

Have you tried using paracetamol instead of ibuprofen? The former thins out the blood, and excessive use of it is in any case not good.

No, I have not. I will look into it a bit. What I have been doing is really cutting back and am now alternating ibuprofen with acetaminophen daily. I also try to see if something else works before I reach for the bottle of pain reliever (which ever one), like laying down if I can or a warm shower or light exercise. I am really trying to improve as many areas of my life (health choices) as I can. I have two beautiful grandbabies that I want to see grow up. When I was smoking doing exercise or anything healthy seemed kind of moot.

You say that you're getting a feeling in your neck and shoulders that is similar to what you get when you are stressed, but you don't "feel" stressed. I can't help but wonder if you are actually really stressed about something but are ignoring it because you've gotten into the habit of doing so. I get the same way when something is really bothering me and I can't do anything about it or I'm not sure what to do, I will put it out of my mind so completely that I forget about it most of the time. When I do that I will get all kinds of physical symptoms, like neck and shoulder tension, stomach pains, headaches, etc., but I'll be unsure why because I was so successful in putting it out of my mind that I actually forgot I had a problem with my life to begin with.

It's quite possible something is bothering you more than you think. It's worth considering anyway. :)

Shortly after my switch from analogs to e-cigs I had the same tightness in my shoulders, neck and jawbone. I even found myself clenching my jaws and grinding my teeth! I also couldn't sit still. I thought maybe it was too much nicotine and, while that might have been part of the issue, I can now see that it was withdrawal symptoms. After a few successful months for me on the e-cigs, my husband made the switch and i got to see the same type of "nervous energy" from the outside looking in. Reducing my nicotine level from 24mg to 18mg did help some, so you could try that. But, in the end, I think it will mostly likely sort itself out :)

It did and thanks. I think you and several others are correct. I think it was a combination or actual stress and nic being obtained in a new way. I have adjusted and feel much better
