Been at the dining table turned workbench today learning what a burned up coil looks like. Gah! I have 2. Messy but neato!

Can't rebuild yet, I don't have the right gauge kanthal but I have 2mm ekowool and cotton cooking twine. So I used some twine for blanket threads- nice flavor! But the ekowool is braided- how many strands for rewicking? And it just comes apart.

Anyway, any day being perplexed by coil heads is better than a day at the office.

Yep. 29 here, watching it SNOWWW! I wish I could help you with the ekowool question. I have some 2.5mm silica that worked out pretty well.

I can't imagine I'm supposed to use a whole section- it's just awfully thick.

Wonder if it'll snow here this winter... this ice is too darn treacherous!

If I understand correctly- You do not separate the ekowool into strands. You just put it straight into the coil, or double it up. Be sure to give it a little play so it doesn't choke the wicking.

It's a bitter 62* here in San Diego. (Sorry I had to do it)

You wicked, wicked creature.

I didn't micro coil with it, just a regular wrap coil. SURELY someone with more experience will pop in. I will say, next time I'll order smaller.

Did you dry burn? You can bring them back to life temporarily, till you get your kanthal.

Thanks for the tip- no, I ogled them awhile and then threw them away. I had some heads that needed to be cleaned that still had nice coils and I have new ones in packaging.

I stopped throwing mine away. I finally started dry burning to bring them back to life, then I got curious about rebuilding so I stopped tossing them out. I've only done a few, but it's pretty easy for a basic build. My micro coil turned out to be more like a sprung slinky, lol. I fired the kanthal before and after, so I'm not sure what happened. Regardless, I won't stop trying :)

A tip for you if you have heads that are rebuildable protank/evod/CE5 whatever don't throw them away. Just stick them in a baggie and hold on to them. You might decide later to rebuild them and then you will have a supply for parts. If you do not there are people here on ECF who would love to have them.

Oh yes, I'm keeping the heads- it's just the burnt up wicking and charred wire I'm throwing away.
