It glows red because it dries out and heats faster than the coil in contact with the wick.
Quick fix, if you have some silica around, unwrap it, take one of fibers and try wrapping the long leg with it, it's worked for me in the past.

You coul also do what some of us do for genies, the leg portion of the coil would need to be twisted kanthal (just fold an extra leg of kanthal onto itself and twist well), the thicker the wire the less heat / longer it takes to heat

I use cotton wicks, what I ended up doing was making a thicker wick, eliminating the need for long legs and now the coil is right up to the air hole, works like a charm. Thanks for the info guys. @ jerms , one leg was significantly longer than the other so now I know to avoid that. I also use the rat tail method, but have not had much luck with my octupus
