I'm a believer of cotton now!

Not working for me. Installed 2 perfect coils with the surgically altered grommet- NO VOLTAGE!

EDIT: Nevermind- I cut off the wrong end.

Bummer!

After vaping a few hours the grommet heated up along the leg and released that horrid taste again.... So I am back to the drawing board and will probably take a break from all this head business and just use my dripper awhile... maybe keep a lookout for Kanger's new head with silicone grommets, and hopefully they will sell the silicone grommets in bags by themselves too as spare parts. And who knows... you might like the flavor on the new heads.

EDIT: Btw look30 took a guess that the flavor was better due to better airflow from the wick with the top of the grommet removed. I tend to agree... can't be much else.

What kind of tank are you using? I haven't had any burnt flavor from my EVODs since using the micros w/cotton.

Hey, that's great! Is that with shaving the grommet, or not?

I'm using a Protank 2 but with Aro heads, as they delivered more flavor. But those were the heads that came on the Aro tanks... the replacement Aro heads are the ones giving me grief. In fact tonight I found a couple Kanger heads I'd re-wicked with cotton maybe a month ago (so must be standard coils cause I wasn't building micro's then) and I stuck one of those in the PT2 and it vaped ok but I could taste very light grommet vapor on some hits, as if it wasn't burning, but heating up the grommet just enough to add a weirdness to the flavor.

And the beat goes on...

I decided to give cotton wicked micro-coils one last try, and built an absolutely perfect coil: 9 tight 30 gauge wraps on a 1/16" drill bit, held them together with tweezers and torched, all wraps touching, beautiful, perfect symmetry, perfectly aligned in the head, 1.9Ω, a freakin' work of art- fires beautifully. Gently threaded a perfect organic cotton wick- not to tight, room to expand when saturated. Saturated the wick and a light flavor wick before replacing the stem.

The result: Lots of vapor, but all the flavor is not there. I compared with another EVOD with the same juice (Ahlusion's delicious Lime Cream) and a silica rebuild. The creamy sweetness and color notes are just not there with the cotton micro.

Conclusion: Either I'm doing something wrong (but doubt it, because I've really done my homework on this) or the folks who are raving about cotton micro-coils are using flavors that are so aggressive that they don't notice the difference, or these folks are just not that sensitive to flavor subtleties.

So, until I hear a reasonable suggestion for something different to try, I'm done with cotton micros.

I hear you and have done the same many times!

Did you try removing your flavor wick from your build? Since I don't use flavor wicks and also don't get good flavor from micro-coils, I doubt this will work, but it's what most vets here would suggest... and only takes a second to try.

Again I know exactly where you're coming from and feel the same way...

I have wondered the same things.

What about a standard coil with cotton?

EDIT: After this post I rebuild the coil in my dripper (there was a micro in it with about 10 wraps) and decided to build a standard coil again myself. I have used nothing but micro's for about a month, so I thought it would be a good test to switch back and expected a big increase in flavor. I did a 7 wrap coil with 30g kanthal @ 1.7 ohms and the taste was .... BAD! Even less taste than the micro I'd had in there!

I also forgot how much I dislike standard coils b/c you can't easily work with them or re-wick them due to being more fragile than a micro-coil. So I took out the wick and dry-burned, compressing it into a micro-coil... since it was only 7 wraps it was a very SHORT mico-coil and didn't even really think it was going to work that well.

Guess what.... I finally got all that flavor everyone is talking about! And the only thing I did different was that this one has so few wraps! Maybe you should try making one with 6 or 7 wraps and see what happens? I won't be totally convinced until I made another and get the same result (which I won't do until I need to), but I am encouraged. I also don't know why others can make them with up to 14 wraps and get flavor, but.... FWIW thought I'd pass this along!

I am right there with you guys. Dead on. I have now done about 6 different rebuilds, have gotten perfect coils using exact same methods as you guys have, and i just cannot get any decent flavor out of cotton. I have racked my brain over it, have read every thread on the subject....not sure I am totally ready to give up on it, cuz I know with THAT many people saying the flavor/vape gets so much better over ekowool/silica wicks, it has to be true....somehow....someway. I like the challenge of all of this, and Im ready to put this to bed. Guess with most things, the devil is in the details. I have read several of your posts and you and I are pretty hand in hand with our experiences and things we have tried. Only to end up with muted, sometimes even weird flavor out of cotton builds. tried every range between 7-11 wraps, with varying degrees of tightness in the cotton wick and cotton flavor wick. (with and without). Anywhoo, wondering if either of you have made any significant break through doing cotton builds or have you gone back to reg wicking materials and such? Salud.
