I'm a diabetic, any concerns I should be aware of?

I haven't got any science to back it up, but I do have something anecdotal--

One of my best buds has diabetes and always has had it since I've known him (~7 years or so). We both used to smoke cigarettes, which I'm sure you know is especially dangerous for a diabetic. We switched to PVs about 2 or 3 years ago (maybe 4) and he's been vaping on his ever since. No problems thus far!

Edit for clarification: My bud has Type 1 diabetes.

I've been type 1 for 18 years. I was diagnosed when I was 19 (adult on-set). I currently have a insulin pump as well. The real advice here should come from your endocrinologist or your primary care physician.

In saying that, I smoked around 1 to 2 packs a day since I was 16. I've been cigarette free since December 11th 2013. I've noticed that my sugars have been swinging a lot. I'm actually need to redo my base line (basil rates) because it seems that after quitting smoking, my resistance has been reduced a bit (less insulin - go figure). My problem right now is I do have swings through the season changes - so I'm being a bit cautious with my changes right now. I already informed my endo, and he said the same thing.

Either way - glad you quit smoking. it's a great choice cause you and I doubled and tripled our chances of strokes and heart issues because we were diabetic and smokers.

I would talk to your doctor. You could also monitor your blood sugar before and after vaping.

Many, if not most, e-liquids are composed primarily of vegetable glycerine and propylene glycol. Vegetable glycerine is converted to glucose in your liver by the same mechanism that body-fat is metabolized. Propylene glycol is metabolized in your live to lactic acid and then pyruvic acid - both are normal products of metabolism.

Hope this helps inform you at least.

Im no doctor but I wouldnt worry too much

"Well I am a doctor! And I worry all the time! Dammit, see a real doctor! Not a stranger on the internet or a TV doctor like me!"

Just kidding, you should be fine. I never heard of anything in vaping that might bother a diabetic. But seriously everybody should discourage everybody from seeking medical advice from strangers on the internet. I know people are only being helpful with responses but not one of us in this thread knows what we are talking about when it comes to your personal health. Someone can chime in and say he is a doctor but what the hell does that really mean. Not like you need an office or a stethoscope to say that around here.

So I started vaping a month ago today and not coincidentally have been cigarette free the same! This is my first post so I'm wondering if there are any diabetic vaporers out there that have any insight for me thank you.

I started vaping about a month ago as well and have been wondering the same thing. I've been noticing that my blood sugar (finger stick) tests have been running about 40-50 points higher since I started vaping. I can't swear it's all attributed to the vaping...cause I'd have to stop for a while to see if it drops back down, but since I've been smoke-free since I started vaping I'm gonna live with this minor elevation. I think the minor elevation in blood sugar is better than the alternative health issues associated with smoking. Besides, I guess all I have to do is bump up my insulin dose a little to compensate. :D

IMO vaping is great for anyone with any medical condition as an alternative to smoking.

I am pretty certain that no one puts sugars in the ejuice (sucrose glucose and the like) simply because it will destroy the coil in minutes (sticky). Glycerin - I don't think it will elevate your sugar level (since its metabolized in the liver), but I am not certain.

My concern is mostly for the kidneys, as we know for sure that Glycerin (and probably PG) can dehydrate you (it binds with water, hence the clouds), so like any vaper would tell you - drink up!

Blood flow - I know diabetics have circulation issues, nicotine as a stimulant can constrain blood vessels slightly and elevate blood pressure (again slightly and temporary, akin to coffee). I asked a few doctors and they said its not a big deal, just don't sleep with a nicotine patch (I have been on patches for YEARS), and some mild exercise will do.

Finally, as a diabetic your first priority is to loose weight, and IMHO vaping certainly helps with that.

Last but certainly not least, the WORST thing you can do as a diabetic is ... SMOKE - that is a certain DEATH sentence (ask any MD). hence if you are a diabetic who smokes, Vaping is your savior.

Thanks, I'm type 1 as well and happy to report no noticeable issues thusfar.

Type 1 diabetic myself, and I can report the same. No issues. My endocrinologist had no problems or warnings either regarding vaping. YMMV, we are all different. The same endo did say if I continued smoking, I would almost certainly suffer an amputation eventually even with a1c 7<.

I'm T2 and have been for 40+ years. My A1c hovers between 5.5 and 6.0 usually. I saw some improvement in sugars after quitting 2PAD smokes. It leveled off vaping over the next year and a half. I have noticed just as with any stimulant such as caffeine, which I avoid, that chain vaping high nic will raise it a bit but its temporary checking with my monitor and never saw an impact on my A1c results. But, on the monitor, actually when I drank caffeine, that raised it more. But, as others have said, everyone is different. I am, evidentally, more sensitive to increased adrenaline than a T2 friend of mine is. Where I get a heart-pounding rush from caf-coffee, she can drink it all day with little effect.
