I'm a total noob!

Hi everyone!
I decided last week I wanted to seriously quit smoking. Ive been smoking about a pack a day for almost 15 years and I've tried everything - inhaler, patches, gum, cold turkey etcetera etcetera!
I figured I would look into e cigs as I know a few people who have quit this way successfully. Just received a 510-t from esmoker Canada and ordered some 18mg juice in a few flavours to see what works. I liked the small size and similarity to a real cigarette. I'm starting this weekend and would greatly appreciate any tips or advice.
thanks in advance!

Hello and welcome! Biggest thing is don't get discouraged. It may take a while to find what you like and what works for you, but once you do, you'll love vaping. Right now I get you want something similar to a real cigarette, most people do at first. But please know they have a huge short coming - short battery life. Keep charger handy and charge often so it don't die on you. I was tired of messing with it and stepped up to a vamo which works very well for me.

Welcome to ECF Sarahb :)

Some people can switch to vaping from cigarettes right away, some may take a little longer. If it takes a while to completely switch, don't worry. The first few weeks of vaping, I was still smoking ~6 cigarettes a day; but that was better than the 30 a day I had been smoking. March 8, 2011 was the day I had my last cigarette and like you I had tried numerous other ways to quit.

Vaping dehydrates you, so drink lots of water.

And lastly, ENJOY :)

Take it easy. Don't build up the pressure on yourself. Don't get mad at yourself if you still feel like a cigarette or even if you have some.

When you draw, take a long slow pull into your mouth only, like drinking thick milkshake through a straw, 4 to 6 seconds. Wait 2 seconds, inhale and then exhale through mouth and nose. The first time, you will probably cough.

Your body goes through some changes when you quit smoking. There is a sticky thread that explains some common symptoms. Worth checking out in case any happen to you.

Finally, DRINK LOTS OF WATER. Very important.

(Some other people posted great advice while I typed this. It's all worth repeating anyway).

The first thing to remember is that it will not taste like a cigarette, I know that doesn't sound like a big deal but trust me it is. If you find yourself vaping like fiend for a while don't worry, that will pass. Because you don't taste a the cigarette taste, your body thinks it's not getting what it's used to, that's false, somewhat. You're getting your nicotine you're just not getting the other harmful chemicals that a cigarette provides. Take Alcarl's advice, don't be discouraged, this works. I smoked a pack-and-a-half a day for about the last 25 years and I don't even desire a cigarette anymore and my vaping frequency has dropped dramatically. Stay the course and all will be okay.

... I'm starting this weekend and would greatly appreciate any tips or advice.
thanks in advance!

My best advise is to take it Slow and Don't get Discouraged.

It can be hard to Break a Addiction/Habit that you have had for 15 Years. I know it was for me.

My other Advise is if 18mg e-Liquid doesn't seem to Cut the Cravings, don't be afraid to try a Higher mg Level. The way Cigarettes are rated for Nicotine and the way that an e-Liquid is rated are Different. And Everyone is Different.

So if the 18mg doesn't work for you, don't give up on e-Cigarettes. Just try a Higher mg.

Best of Luck and let us know how things go. And the Questions we Know you will have.

Thanks leoleoleo, tomcatt and alcarl! I have been reading the threads for a few days and thought it might be good to join....talk to some people who have been there! I appreciate the advice!

No problem at all Sarah, everyone's got your back here. I forgot to say, welcome to the forum. You're making an awesome decision, maybe starting on a big adventure, and I hope it works out as well for you as for many of the others here.

I like to put together a checklist for everyone who comes to ecf and is curious about what to start with other than the mall kiosk/gas station style ecigs. Hopefully this can give you a start as to what to buy, of course this all depends on a few things; what you want out of vaping, what you want to spend(financial status), and really how dedicated you are to making this big lifestyle switch! Best of luck and of course...Welcome to the family! :vapor:

Checklist:

-2+ Ego style batteries (do yourself a favor, don't gimp out on batteries. Go 650MAH+ and get at least 2)
-Cartomizers, Atomizers, Tanks, Carto-tanks, Clearomizers...whatever you are curious about..do research and give them a try! Each different juice delivery system produces a different vape. Some might produce more vapor but gimp on the flavor a tad and some might do the opposite.
-SAMPLE PACKS OF JUICE! holy crap I can't stress that enough...when you are first getting into vaping get SAMPLE PACKS! A lot of vendors sell sample packs of juice (5+ different juices in usually 5ml bottles) they can be bought for cheap usually and you can sample a ton of different flavors. I recommend getting at least 2 sample packs to start with, if money isn't an option get 3+ from different vendors. I've had a plain menthol flavor from one vendor that tastes 100% different from another, since it isn't mass-produced and it is handmade, the making and flavors are different per each vendor.

Starter vendor list:

madvapes.com(fast shipping, out of north carolina, great customer service and decent prices!)
fasttech.com(out of chine, ok shipping, most of the time this is a great vendor to buy from for cheap batteries and parts if you aren't in a hurry)
ecblends.com(good juices, I see you have already tried them...so try some more flavors from them!)
vapor4life.com(ok prices, decently fast shipping)
namberjuice.com(great juices, ok pricing and fast shipping)
