Hello,

Okay so I decided to buy an e-cig today, with the intention of gradually lowering my nicotine intake to zero eventually. This is my first time vaping .

I used to smoke around 7-10 cigarettes a day from the strongest brands (a pack at parties). I bought a 20ml liquid with 11mg nicotine today, but the throat hit feels way too powerful and I'm having troubles with estimating how much I should vape. I'm kind of afraid I'm taking in too much nicotine and I'm just making my addiction worse.. or I'm not vaping enough and I'll end up reaching for cigarettes again. Right now I take 6-7 drags every hour or so.

Can an experienced user point me in the right direction? Keeping my old smoking habits in mind, what liquid strength should I choose and how long should it last me?

What kind of flavor are you using and what is the PG/VG ratio? What kind of battery are you using and what OHM is the coil? If battery/mod is variable what power levels are you running?

In general to reduce throat hit, I would, Increase VG or reduce power or reduce PG or flavorings or reduce nicotine or a little of all-of-the-above.. If I could build my own coil I would add surface area, also.

In simple terms IF you are running the C14 on a EGO/stick type battery (8-11 watts), I would suggest 12mg/mg to 20mg/ml. If you are are running at higher watts, less nic and/or less PG. Then there the flavoring, some flavors are harsher than others. Personally I found UNFLAVORED and tobacco flavored juice to be the best when I first started vaping.

welcome bacon!

The vapor is going to be much more dense than smoke, so the sensation in your throat will be different.
Think shower steam vs steam in the face from boiling water.
Try to just pull the vapor into your mouth and puff it out...cigar like. The nicotine is absorbed before it hits the lungs (mucus membranes), so you will still get your fix.
Watch a few videos of folks using exactly the device you have and note how they inhale, the length, strength and technique.
At 1.1% nic the 1.6Ω ego should be a good match.

good luck

Let's see.....

Using 11mg nic, 6 or 7 hits an hour, a bit worried it's too much, but also worried it might not be enough? Sounds like you have hit a pretty good middle ground. IMHO, the first step is to do whatever you need to keep you off the analogs and it sounds like you are doing that. Relax and enjoy your vape, then adjust as consistent indications give you a direction to change.

It sounds like the "harsh" throat hit is your big concern now. You've gotten a lot of choices for adjustments and I would only suggest taking them one at a time to pinpoint which works the best. Lowering your wattage, if possible, would be the easiest. Trying a different flavor, higher VG content, and/or lower nic should be fairly easy.

Welcome to ECF and vaping. Your "problems" are not uncommon for those starting out. It does take a little getting used to.

Thanks for the help guys, I'm getting the hang of it.

The vapor tastes fine, not burnt or metallic at all. It's just that it kicks too much, but it's fairly inconsistent. Some hits are difficult to inhale and other times it feels just fine. It's literally my first day of using it so don't take my word at face value! I could very well be just overthinking it. I'll definitely buy a 6mg liquid with a different flavor tomorrow and see how that goes.

Few comments. 11mg is not a lot. Part of your problem will be hangsen liquid as it's high PG. 6-8 puffs per hour is not going to do it either.
If you don't like the 'hit' try higher VG.
Dropping to 6 is not my recommended strategy, no. Each to their own.
You are vaping at low power and 3 or 6 is for higher power. i.m.o.
Also (as I'm in negative mode) that was a strange setup to offer to you.
Overall, some thinking to be done. No more hangsen though, please.
I hope you got a good deal. The early days are tough & I think you should acclimatise yourself before tinkering too much. 11 mg is 'spot on the money' for me. I used 18mg from a similar smoking background ( not so heavy a smoker, but stronger cigarettes)

PS, if it's use to you, your concerns about increasing your addiction are understandable but please don't worry. Unless you exceed 4 ml a day (11mg), your nicotine yield will be lower & even if you got the same amount you'll notice a distinct lack of cravings after a few months, I promise you. I can go without a vape for 6,7 hours easy (12mg) that was only 2,3 hours when a smoker.

I pretty much agree with all of the above. The nic level seems appropriate for the amount of smoking you did. The nice thing about vaping is you can always make changes in the nic level of your e-liquids.

Pg is going to give more throat hit (harshness to some) than Vg. Some online e-liquid manufacturers actually allow you to choose the Pg/Vg ratio when you place an order. So that's something to also consider.

Many new vapers take a while to get used to vaping. Remember, when you first started to smoke you more than likely coughed a lot until you got used to it. You'll get used to vaping soon enough, too.

You'll probably find that you'll need to upgrade your equipment. Most of us do at some point. A variable power "mod" looks to be in your near future. Below are some articles that I've written to help new vapers make an informed decision.

What works for one person does not always work for another. In order for me to not slip in the beginning, I had to chain vape...so I ended up getting too much nicotine. (even though I was at the suggested level) If you feel you are getting too much nicotine, you can always buy a zero nic version of your e-liquid and cut the high nic down. Or you can fill one tank with high nic and one with low and vape depending on your needs at the moment.
