Is there a chance that a 18650 that isnt under load can vent? Just got it in my head the other day and is bugging me. Just have visions of not being home and a battery letting go and burning my house down. Have had them for months without issue but it just keeps coming up in my head, esp now that im house sitting for my uncle and his house is big, expensive and was built by him and his friends. Couldn't find anything on Google (which im guessing is a good sign). IDK, just dont want to risk burning a house down with my pets in it over a hobby I can give up right now.

So lets hear it, is it a risk or am I just paranoid and crazy? at the point right now where i just want to carry my batteries with me or keep them in the fireplace lol

AFAIK the only way a battery will vent is if it gets hot. The only things that can make them hot enough, aside from putting it in an oven or tossing it in a fire, is to draw too much current from it, over charge it, or puncture it causing an internal short. All of these will make them heat up and vent.

Now, venting will not produce a fire unless your battery uses ICR chemistry. IMR and hybrids do not burn when they vent. Some of the latest batteries do not even vent when they are shorted. Don't know about when those are put in a fire or punctured.

Store your batteries in plastic battery cases and vape on :thumb:
