I'm new and need some assistance

I have been reading through the forum here all day. I guess I am just really green, and don't understand the terms or the acronyms. Can someone fill me in on the terms used here and the most common acronyms.

Also, a year ago my wife purchased a "Smox" model 510 electronic cigarette kit for me while she was picking up my stogies at the cigar shop. However, at the time, I was not ready to quit smoking. I just opened up one cartridge, charged up the battery and tried it out and wasn't very interested in it.

Fast forward to now, I now have a son, and I really want to quit. I am on Active Duty and have made use of the benefits that are available to me, but none seem to help. Last week I decided to pull out the E-Cig kit and it really honestly seems to help quite a bit. I have only smoked a pack in the last week. However, I would like to quit smoking the normal cigarettes all together.

I need a little help choosing another more robust e-cig. Actually, I would like to get 2 of them. One that is more robust that I can use all day long at work (Commanding Officer has approved) or at home. I would also like to get one that is more inconspicuous. I tried to look around and see what is available and....OH MY GOSH... there are a ton of products out there. That is why I came here. I am hoping somebody can help me make sense of it all.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as well as recommendations.

The 1100 mah batteries will each last you about 11 hours with a couple of cartos/juice. Cartos will generally last you 5 to 7 days each and plan for about 3 ml of eliquid a day. Don't buy all the same flavor as you will need to experiment to find the ones you love.

I will let someone else suggest an inconspicuous setup.

Welcome & congrats on wanting to take the next step. The 510 is probably the most common, it takes many names, but the connection type is the same. The standard 510 battery is probably the most common but battery life (between charging) is relatively short. Most have gone to a Riva or Ego type, which is a fatter battery but longer on battery life (should last most of the day, depending on use) and available in 510 connection.

I'm not sure what you want to spend, but...if it were me and I was doing this all over again...for a "cig like" unit, I'd go with the Volt from smokelessimage (spend the extra dollar or whatever it is to get the sealed automatic batteries), they have a case that you can take along with you to keep the batteries charged while you're out and they hit nicely for a small device. You can refill the cartomizers yourself...maybe a couple or three days worth, then toss it and get a fresh one.

For something with more kick, (and here's where it's going to get a little pricey), variable voltage. I guess the LavaTube isn't really that pricey, but I've never owned one and I suggest what I know to be a rock solid device, the ProVari.

Now, the Volt is 808 threaded and takes 808 cartomizers and the ProVari is 510 threaded and takes 510 cartomizer or atomizers. If you don't want to refill a lot, there are a lot of different cartomizer tanks that work great on the ProVari.

It took 5 volt vaping to get me off the last few cigarettes. But it's been the variable voltage that's really kept me happy with vaping....and every once in a while, I love the feel of the automatic skinny vape because I can feel like I'm just relaxing with a "cigarette".

For the mor inconspicuous 1 I would recommend a "slim" style. You can check out vapeshot.com for their slim 510 style kit. Or V4L is good as well for KR808 style (different thread).

I don't know if either of the above will ship overseas though.

Any of the fat battery models are good for long charge and you can use the hotter low resistance cartomizers on them (most people use cartomizers for everyday vaping, not atomizer+cartridge. Boge are most popular on 510-threaded devices)

Ego (3.4v, if you need to pocket it consider Ego-T for its 5-click disable)
Riva 510 at Liberty-Flights.com (3.7v, consider the Riva 510 SE kits that have 3-click disable)
Kgo as listed above (very long charge, I believe 3.7v)

Or simple 3.7v mods - I actually like 3.7v plastic box mods - they have about the same charge as the smaller 650mah Rivas and Egos and box mods have an on/off switch for pocketing.

Or a variable voltage model like Provari so you could use the same standard resistance cartos the slim 510 uses but crank up the heat on your big unit.

For the more stealthy model - most popular slim models a Joye 501 manual used with Boge 3 ohm cartomizers (or you could try the single coil Smoktech 2.5 ohm cartos - anything single coil and 2.5-3 ohms). These are same 510 threading as Ego but must use their own lower mA charging cable and the standard resistance single coil atomizers/cartomizer.

Or for something as small but stronger/warmer (and different threading) look at KR808D-1 and I recommend manuals (harder to kill w/ juice, easier to get a good hit, won't turn on accidentally from wind of vibration). Many of the V4L.com have a longer safety cutoff allowing longer activation/drag. The rest have 5-second safety cutoff - see standard manufacturer KR808D-1 as well as the rubberized models at SmokelessImage, Bloogplanet, Halocigs G6

if you want something that is robust you are definitely NOT going to find that in a mini slim style ecig. Thats what everyone dreams of.

why not get a mini slim for those occasions that you must be "inconspicuous", like the Volt or BloogMax Fusion are great slim setups. Then get a ROBUST mod for home where the vape will be much more fulfilling.

The Riva is a great starter kit that is semi disposable. Will last for months and fit 510 which is the most common connection. If you are looking for no fuss no muss maybe eventually a bottom feeder for home like Reo. This has removable and rechargeable batteries (as most mods do) and is pretty care free. Batteries can be rotated and will last a long time and Mods (or modified ecigs) retain some of their value for resale if you don't like them. I recommend that you look at the "pictures of your set up" thread to get an idea of what's available out there for your home mod.

Make sure to order cartomizers to match the connection of your new mod and buy them in a resistance that is compatible with your ecig/mod. Ask here if you are not sure. Also know that cartomizers are different than cartriges which come with some starter kits. Cartriges are nasty in my opinion and not the best way to get started. Make sure to order extra juice and to get a variety of juices. Taste buds bounce all over the place for the first few weeks off of ciggies so it'll be worth the investment. I've saved juices that aren't my favorites in case I ever run out (which I haven't yet knock wood).

Get a feel for which ecigs or mods are most appealing to you and then you can post here to find out the best accessories to pair with it. Most importantly, just do it! Nothing like putting those stinkies down for good.

The above is a good recommendation for an all day PV, one batt should last your entire work day ... for a more inconspicuous perhaps something like the new Elips model/style e cig ( google it) . I would suggest an analog style however, the LED tips of them kinda ruin the part about being inconspicuous

Re what cartomizers are

atomizers (aka attys) only heat and do not hold juice. atomizers degrade slowly or can die suddenly. Normal atomizers use cartirdges (aka carts, open-ended plastic and stuffing pieces which may suddenly dump their juice) or a drip tip (for vaping a couple of drops of liquid at a time, on a sealed manual battery) - most end up switching to cartomizers for everyday vaping, and use dripping, tanks or cartridges for testing new juices or vaping occasional juices. Tank atomizers (like what Ego-T uses) use special clear plastic tanks but they can also have issues and about 50% or more who buy these end up switching to cartomizers for everyday vaping. So basically atomizers degrade or die, but cartridges can be washed/restuffed, drip tips last forever. Tanks for tank atomizers can be rinsed, may need new soft doors, and last until they start leaking or something.

cartomizers (aka cartos) are shorter-life parts that hold juice and contain their own heating coil. They are mostly sealed except for the hole in the threaded end and the hole at the mouth end cap (or a drip tip can be used as a mouthpiece there). If thinner clear juices are used many people can get a week or more use out of a cartomizer. Extremely heavy vapers may only get 4 days. You need to keep them damp so they don't singe and get bitter. The benefit is your favorite juices can be completely separate and not mixed in an atomizer, and your experience will be like new every time you start a fresh carto. Downside - you need a way to keep a stock of cartos so for people in out-of-the-way places they may not be a good option. However, I do need a box of 5 cartos much less often than I need a 30ml bottle of juice. I can run 15-20ml of juice through each carto.

Batteries - expect them to last for 150-250 recharges and start weakening or failing to hold charge as well.

And whatever you depend on you need spares of (including batteries and chargers)

I guess I had better explain myslef and my job better so I can get a good recommendation.

I am in the US Coast Guard. I handle all VHF (Line of Sight) communications from New Hampshire to Maine and all of Lake Champlain. I also handle all HF (long range) communications that I am able to hear throughout the world. In a nutshell, if you yell MAYDAY, I am the one who answers you, calms you down, gets all the right information, and sends the proper assets to assist you.
I have a very stressfull but rewarding job. The stress level also increases considerably based on the time it takes an asset to get to a person in need.

On average I will smoke between 1.5 to 2 packs a day when I work. On my days off, I smoke .5 to 1 pack a day.
I currently have a 1 year old son and going outside in Maine (currently 16 degrees) is starting to get old real quick.

If I have a rather rough stretch, sometimes I will go out and smoke 2-4 cigarettes in a row.


I sat down and discussed the situation with my Department Head yesterday. He seems to be fully supportive of my transition.

I would prefer a long lasting model. I can care less about size as long as I get the cessation. I would prefer a 2 part 510 model because the local cigar shop carries disposable 510 cartomizers, in the event it happens to be a slow shipping day or I forgot to order new ones. That is all he carries, no liquids and no kits. I do want to try the e-liquids but I do not know the difference between the PG or the VG, only that one has glycerin. I currently have a smox kit it works "OK" but only last about 45 minutes. I am assuming it lasts that long because it sat for over a year before I started using it. One thing that is rather annoying, is the fact that when I open a new cartomizer and take the first puff, a lot of liquid comes out of the end into my mouth and has a horrible taste. When it does not do this, I rather like the taste of the vapor. I would prefer it to be not as expensive as my first model. (wife paid over $100 for it at a local cigar shop). However, if it is of good quality and will last awhile, I have no propblem spending more.

Oh good old shortwave.. I remember when I used to listen to shortwave stations from around the world was fun. I lived in Bath, Maine for a few months few years back..

The kgo is great by the way I've had mine for a few days and I love it.

I stand by my original recommendation. The Kgo from Hoosier which is about 45.00 plus your bits and pieces. I just checked his site and it says he is swamped, but will be back open for business tomorrow. The Kgo is a stellar choice, is not finicky, and paired with cartos (single coil Boge 2.0 LRs) will not let you down. This mod is sturdy and will last you for a long time. Once you are comfortable with cartos, you could put a 3.5 ml carto tank on it and not have to refill it for your entire day.

Personally, I would not bother with a mini ecig.

We see more problems from new member about their Egos than any other ecig, plus it's only 3.4 volts.

PS....if you want to jump in with both feet, I would also highly recommend a Reo Grand, or Woodvil. It is a bottom feeder and holds a 6 ml bottle inside that you just have to squeeze now and then to feed a carto. It uses a non-proprietary AW IMR 18650 1300 mah battery that will last you 1 to 2 days on a charge. The Reo is about 150.00 plus you would also have to buy the batteries and charger in addition to your bits and pieces.

Ha i saw that too dearme, hoosier e being swamped. That's where i ordered mine. They are probably swamped because they have the lowest price. NWvapors has them for like 15 more I believe.

No, almost all PVs, except for some slim ecigs, are manuals. Manuals are a much better choice since they have a sealed battery and are much harder to kill with a juice leak. You also can not drip on autos. Also, you have much more control over your vaping style with a manual. Manual just means a button you push when you want to vape. You will not even think about it after you have vaped a couple of times.
