I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I've been vaping for 4 months, but it's been trial and error. I get a burnt taste after 2 days of putting in a new atomizer. The guy at the vape shop said they should last 2 weeks. They haven't been much help. I'm starting to think that they are taking advantage of me, cause I'm older-62. They keep recommending more expensive stuff for me to buy. I have a U20 battery and a nautilus Mini. I don't know what I'm doing to get that burnt taste that doesn't go away, until I replace the atomizer and then it happens again. Any ideas? I need a new Vape Shop that I can trust!

What wattage are you running your Nautilus Mini at? Anytime I went too far over 7 watts with my Nautilus my coil would start losing taste and go bad. I've read others have more luck with higher wattage than that, but I never really was able to. At that time I used 50/50 or 70pg/30vg with my Nautilus.

ETA: Do you remember what they were recommending you to buy?

What kind of juice are you using?

This is where I would start. A dark or sweet juice can gunk up the coil fast creating an off slightly burnt flavor and a high VG juice might not be wicking properly causing dry hits and burn the wicking. If it's a high VG juice you might want to try using a smaller airhole, I had to do that with high VG juice in mine but I was using the old BVC coils so I'm not sure how they compare.

If by U20 you mean that you're using a 20 watt Istick then it could be set too high, start at a low setting and slowly work your way up until you hit the sweet spot(going by taste and vapor production).

I started off with an Itaste starter kit, which I burnt through the atomizers in that, also. Then they said to try Nautilus with the itaste, I already had. Then they said to get get the U20, which has adjustable wattage and voltage, to go along with the Nautilus. All combinations had the same results: burnt taste and burning in the back of my throat, unable to tolerate.

Hello and welcome to the forum. Glad to have you here!:)

If you are getting a burnt taste (we call those "dry hits"), if usually means your wick cannot pull the eliquid fast enough to keep up with your battery. There are a couple of things you can do:

1. Dial down your voltage. This will vaporize the eliquid at a slower rate (if your battery allows you to do this)
2. Decrease the airflow, if your tank has adjustable airflow. The decrease in airflow will increase vacuum inside the tank's atomizer, which should increase the flow of juice to the wick..
3. Take a sharp draw (or two) on your drip tip (without engaging your battery). This will pull more eliquid into the coil so that it will be available when you press the battery button and take a draw.

You will get the feel of this over time and develop a sense of how often you will need to do this to avoid "dry hits". The PG/VG ratio of your eliquid also comes into play, as VG is thicker than PG . If you use high VG try adding a few drops of distilled water (per mls of juice) to your tank to thin out the eliquid.

9.6 watts might be a bit high, I would start at 7 watts and slowly bump it up until it starts to taste funny and then back it off a bit.

Are you priming it before you use it? By that I mean are you letting it sit for a while when you put a new coil in, if you don't let it sit until the juice is fully absorbed into the wicking material it will burn and never taste right after that. When I was using my nautilus mini I would drop liquid directly onto the new coil before installing and then let it sit for about 5 minutes, the newer coils are supposed to take even longer to prime.

The name of the pen is U20. I'm doing 9.6 watts, 4.20 volts.
I'll try a lower VG juice with a smaller airhole, thanks.

Superb! I got this advice when I started --- when you put in a fresh coil start with the lowest wattage that your U20 will allow. And then bump up the wattage slowly from there. You'll learn where the flavor starts coming through for you and you won't have to take a chance at starting at a too high of a wattage. Best of luck!

There's probably people here with way better suggestions than me . . . I'm a pretty new noob too.

But, when I had my first machine, I would get a burnt taste quite a lot and we thought we were getting just pretty bad coils to be honest. They didn't seem to last anywhere near a month and that was with trying to do everything possible to make them last.

I goofed on my latest machine and bought a Delta II Atomizer with a coil that my machine couldn't run and took it into my local vape shop. The concept of a rebuildable coil seemed really scary to me, personally. Now, I'm lucky because i'm married to an electrical engineer so the concept of building a coil once they showed him how was fairly simple. In fact, they just sold us the kit to build it, guided him while we were in the store, and he actually built the one I'm using now.

In the few days we've had the rebuildable, the taste difference is really noticeable. In fact, both he and I swear there will never be a premade coil again on any of our machines.

If you feel like your local vape store is taking advantage of you, I highly suggest that you try another one. Even if you think it's the only one around, do another search. They tend to pop up without a lot of warning and I don't think they are all built equally. While the store near us was nice and helped, they also felt the need to insult my machine that I had just gotten that day for not being "powerful" enough. I think sometimes in our modern world, people can just be rude.

Just my two cents, hope you get it figured out, that burnt taste is the worst.

I personally would recommend picking up an Aspire ET-S with a BVC coil to get you buy. It's not the biggest or best or any of that. It would be a starter that won't be frustrating. It saved the day for me when I started. You can find one for $7 dollars. It will help with the frustration while you navigate the minefield of products to figure out what you want.

You're telling me, it's great that they sell huge mods that were pumping out insane wattage and i'm glad they're happy with their toys.

but my newest machine is an Evic and it does some party tricks that theirs did not, lol. Literally, the first thing I said was, "I just got this today" and they tried to sell me on a new one without even stopping to realize that wasn't an option.

Just got a bit carried away on what I thought I could run, I tried to sub ohm . . .But I was happy that they just built me a coil considering I'm new to all this and the price of the Evic plus the delta II was a pretty good investment in a fairly new hobby to me. And maybe eventually when the Evic Supreme comes down in cost, I will be able to sub ohm but for now, i'm happy in Evic Land.
