I'm really bad at dripping.

I got 10 new flavors today and tried dripping to taste them. Apparently, I'm a dripping failure. For the most part, all I kept getting was burnt atty and now my throat is killing me.

I would put 3 drops on the wick thingy and replace the empty cart, then vape...burnt atty. I would put 4 or more drops in and replace cart, then vape...flooded atty, then burnt atty.

What gives? What am I doing wrong?

Ive just been using an atty for the first time and one things it could be is holding the button too long; the atty may be getting really hot. My problem when I was getting burnt flavor was the juice that I was using. I rinsed it in hot water and tried another juice and it was way better.

edit: Also between flavor, rinse the atty in hot water and blow the water out so the old flavor isnt still in there

OK, at least I'm in friendly territory...

First got an eGo cart kit and went through all the gymnastics with fiber and foam. Ah ha, I espied the eGo tanks and bought some atties mit tanks. Um, OK, I'm a tinkerer, but day-um... Lo and behold I tried the eGo Mega dual coil cartos and haven't had a finer vape.

Between the combo shifts, I dabbled in dripping. First with a 510 de-bridged atty and, geeeeze, what da heck is everyone braggin' about? A bit later, I tried a de-spiked/de-plated eGo tank atty. Ummm, not too bad. This is what I now use to sample new juices. But it's still hit or miss.

So yeah, I feel your pain... For 99% of my vaping, I'm sticking with my eGo batts and the eMDCCs!

P.S. Yepper, I did try a mod... an Old Goat. No love here... light flavor, TH and vapor. Traded it within a week.

I failed dripping 101- and then I failed remedial dripping. I SUCK at it...

Yep...me too...that's why I went back to using cartomizers. Atty's are only good to try a flavor and then I have to even work at that to get it right...I've been vaping 11 months and still haven't gotten the hang of it yet.

Sorry. It's a standard Riva 510. Don't know voltage or atty resistance, sorry.
It can take a while to get the hang of it, but it's oh so worth it. Like everything else in life, practice makes perfect.

I only bother with cartos when I'm driving for extended periods.

You didn't mention your equipment. More specifically voltage and atty resistance.

here is what i found that works and should fix most of your problems. with a new or dry atty i will drip 3 drops to start with then vape till the flavor starts to taper off then add 2 more drops and vape then 2 more drops etc. ive found anymore than 2 or 3 drops and it will flood or leak. the other issue i think you are having is you are not adding more drops soon enough. this is why you are getting dry burning hits. you need to learn when the atty is starting to run dry and add more BEFORE it gets dry. there is a learning curve for this but if you do it long enough you will get the hang of when you need to add more. i also dewick my attys but thats another discussion all together.

Landhew-
I'm still trying to find my ideal setup. Till I do, I drip probably 90% of the time. I'm not claiming to be an expert, but I can tell you what works well for me. I started with the standard 510 atty that came with my ego. It was ok. Then I tried a low resistance (LR) atty, and found it really brought out the flavors alot more. I de-wicked my standard to make it easier to use for testing flavors, but I still prefer the LRs.

Like WIvapor said, if I have a clean, dry atty, I'll put around 6 drops or so (just short of flooding it) and let it sit for a few minutes to saturate. From there I'll take a puff or two then add another 2 drops and get to vaping. How often you'll be adding more drops is hard to say. I've found with some juices that I'm dripping two or three drops every 5-6 drags, where with others I can double that before I start losing flavor or getting a burnt taste. I haven't paid enough attention to be sure but I think the thicker, higher VG juices are the ones that I can go longer with before I need to add drops.

Now if you get several new juices and are trying them all, your atty will already be saturated between flavors, so you won't add quite as much. The way that works for me when I switch flavors is I try to vape the majority of what's in the atty, just till I almost get that burnt taste. I blow out the atty several times. Fortunately, when I was a smoker I didn't lose much lung capacity. So When I blow them out, I do it till I don't hear any gurgling and its just air whistling through the air holes. Makes me a little dizzy to blow that hard lol but it works. Then I add about 4 drops of the new flavor and blow just a slight puff of air through it just to help push the new flavor through to saturate to the bottom of the atty. Give it about a minute to soak in. Add 1 maybe 2 more drops, and start vaping. I typically start off with taking one or two quick drags just to heat up the atty and make sure I didn't flood it. Usually that amount works well, but if I did add too much I just remove the atty, wipe the excess off from the threads, stuff the corner of the paper towel down into the battery well to soak up any excess juice and then screw it back on.

Couple other things that might help you enjoy dripping more:

  • Empty carts work, but drip tips make it alot easier.
  • If you're going to try several new flavors on the same atty, start with the milder flavors (fruity flavors), then move on to the heavier/sweet flavors (caramel, etc), and save the minty/menthol ones for last.
  • Buy a few extra attys so you always have a clean one available, and give LR's a shot.
  • If you haven't already tried using isopropyl alcohol to clean your attys, get some 91% and soak them overnight, then blow them out in the morning and let them dry all day. I've found alcohol works great to clean out some of the nasty flavor that builds up after a while.
