... but curiously enough, it seems that for me my instinct was right and the advice was wrong

Especially the advice about vaping for a few months before trying DIY - not me! For various reasons the decision to try an e-cig and the decision to make my own liquid were simultaneous:
- No e-liquids for sale in my country containing any nicotine, and I was extremely unsure of how strong a liquid I would need/want.
- Been smoking for 23 years, and I am still extremely picky about the taste of my cigarettes.
(The traditional variety of Kent is my favourite, it's been impossible to find in most of Northern Europe for the last 5-10 years, though the red mini-nanotek was quite close, my other favourites are Davidoff Gold or Magnum (for festive occasions), and I also don't mind Rothmanns, (some) Dunhill, and sometimes as a joke something "perfume-y" like Vogue Arome or Sobranie Cocktail. I'm not averse to the occasional Camel or Gauloises Blonde, but absolutely can't stand Marlboro or LM.)

As it turns out wrt nicotine it was a very very good decision to not order any pre-filled cartridges of a certain strength. As a 20-40 cigarettes/day smoker for a long time, and having a hard time getting below a pack a day even while wearing a nicotine patch I would surely have ordered a high strength. And been absolutely miserable, because it turns out even 15-18mg/ml feels far too strong for me.
So that turned out to have been a surprisingly good call.

Being so picky about flavours I wasn't terribly surprised when the no-nic sampler tanks I got from my local(ish) e-cig vendor seemed very overflavoured, perfumy and sweet to me (this was ENJuice's no-nics, Robusta - cut with ~12mg/ml unflavoured to about 1:2 is my favourite of those so far).

Where I made a huge mistake in not doing my research properly was in the actual PV I got. The tank systems seemed so handy and practical...
Not for trying out many new flavours, they aren't! Especially if you don't have loads of spare caps for the tanks. I also thought 5 empty 5ml bottles and 5 empty 10ml bottles would be plenty - lol!
I've done lots of sloppy inexact mixing in 1ml tanks just to try "a little more this" - not a good idea, but no disasters either yet.

I'm now waiting for two packages with assortments of drip tips, cartomizers and one or two plain 510-atomizers before I really start mixing (and of course I couldn't resist throwing in a few more flavours/eliquids... ).

I of course have tons of questions for you experts here - but a bit of trouble in how to phrase them.
Is it better if I start separate threads for them (they are rather diverse - ranging from "is it possible/easy to drip-vape on a tank-atty?" to "pure alcohol or DW? pro's and con's and how much?" to "why mix such a strong menthol PGA?"), or should I just throw them out as I think of them here, or search for reasonably related threads from the last years or so?

I'm assuming that you mean the ego-t tank atty. If I'm correct, then yes. You should remove the spike with the wick to drip. However, I don't recommend it. The ego-t tank attys will leak to the battery easier than most other attys, unless someone else has a fool proof method. I'm not very fond of the dripping method in these attys. I recommend the low res 510 riva attys with a drip tip for dripping. But don't throw out those tanks. Save em for a rainy day. If you go with my suggestion, you may end up hating that tank atty, be warned.

Yes, Ego-tank atty. And I also have a 510-T atty. The latter I have been experimenting with a bit (it was fabulous at first, but within a few days I think it got burnt a bit or something), and dripping into it without removing the spike sort of works, but does leak quite a bit (I'm probably drowning the poor atty).
I have a plain 510-atty (2.3 Ohms) on the way, and an assortment of various tank-attys and cartomizers. Once I get them I'll have to get more acquainted with their innards and try to figure out what the best set-up for testing my mixes would be.

I quite like tanks otherwise - if nothing else they are easy to fill, but for testing new mixes they aren't exactly practical or economical.

Taintedhalo, I know what you mean about cutting your smoking in half - that's exactly what happened to me. And I didn't even try!

Oh, I'm so impatient for my additional vaping gear to get here - I just checked and my package from the UK is on its way, but hasn't yet reached Finland (track-trace.com is awesome, new to me). Alas my Swedish package is not trackable, but it should be here soon too.

While I am waiting for my gear:
Anyone have any best practices to recommed when it comes to cleaning tanks?

Do I just wash them out with warm water and wait a week for them to dry?
I also have 96% ethanol (aka PGA) and Isopropyl Alcohol (disinfecting liquid), might either of them be useful?

PGA yes, Isopropyl no.

Thanks, good to know.

Can I ask why? Is it because Isopropyl for disinfection isn't quite pure (mine certainly isn't), and could leave residue affecting taste? Or is it corrosive in some way? Or what?

(I just happen to have loads of it, while my supply of 96% is a bit limited when it comes to what I have in the house. Something like almost a gallon vs less than half a litre/quart.)

Tona actually I was talking about a friend of mine. I quit smoking the day I got my supplies but I have an ego-t kit for daily vaping. And I am making a puck mod next week. The friend that cut his in half took my little 510 that I use for taste testing my juice mixes. LOL I know the can't wait ...if I didn't use a po box I would be so stalking the mailman for my deliveries. When I have a package coming I visit the tracker pages more than facebook LOL ......

Basically, if something says it's not intended to be taken internally, like rubbing alcohol, I don't use it. Not that I go around drinking PGA. Cheap vodka will work, as well.

I understand the idea, but it would be nice to know something more detailed.

I mean we are talking about *cleaning* here, not something to add to one's vaping liquid. I eat and drink out of glasses and bowls that have been through the dishwasher, and dishwashing powder/tablets/whatever is something I don't want anywhere near my food.
I think I've probably used the rubbing alcohol for stuff that is used for food without a second thought - can't remember really, but it seems highly likely (soaking particularly icky moldy things in it before a final rehabilitating run through the dishwasher, or removing glue-type stains or the like).
