POM: Not Safe Electronic Cigarette
General / Friday, August 6, 2010 18:13 AM

Metrotvnews.com, Sydney: Drug and Food Control Agency warned the public that electronic cigarettes that have been circulating in some cities are illegal and unsafe products.

"This product has not been clinically tested therefore dangerous. World Health Organization (WHO) has declared product is not safe to eat, to recommend to prohibit its circulation," explained Director of Drugs Control POM Danardi Sosrosumihardjo in Jakarta, Friday (6 / 8).

Electronic cigarette or "Elecronic Nicotine Delivery Systems" (ENDS) is marketed as a substitute for cigarettes and claimed not cause odor and smoke.

Shaped like a regular cigarette, but instead of burning tobacco leaves, like a conventional cigarette products, ENDS burning liquid and vapor that use batteries into the user's lungs.

The product is marketed under many names, among them the electronic cigarette, ecigarro, electro-smoke, green-CIG, and smartsmoker.

Danardi said it had received reports from various areas, among others, Makassar, Semarang, Lampung and Palembang, about the circulation of illegal products and has coordinated with the Ministry of Commerce for enforcement.

"Because it's illegal, POM can not supervise. The product is also not registered as a cigarette that can not be disciplined by the Customs," explained Danardi.

In a leaflet or flyer, one product called Surabaya Electric Cigarette marketing two types of cigarettes, which are black and green.

Black cigarettes sold for Rp190 thousand and green colors for Rp160 thousand. It also claims the product has obtained national and international certificates which argued strongly by POM.

"This product has not been registered in Indonesia. In many countries also circulated illegally. China and Hong Kong are now banned because it is considered toxic," said Danardi.

ENDS industry calls are not clearly disclose the combination of chemicals that entered during the setup process. "The industry is also not clear, but from Internet search found at least 24 unlicensed companies and more brands and models," explained Danardi.

POM United States, the FDA in May 2009 and then conducted an analysis of these cigarettes and examine the contents of the e-cigarette from the two companies. The result is found that it contains diethylene glycol and specific nitrosamines in tobacco.

The FDA study also showed the inconsistency level of nicotine in the container with the same label. In fact, in a container labeled ENDS does not contain nicotine was found nicotine.

"The World Health Organization" (WHO) in September 2008 had stated that they did not agree and do not support electronic cigarette consumption as a tool to quit smoking.

On 6-7 May 2010 and then, WHO is convening a meeting to discuss safety related regulations ENDS and states that the product has not been through enough testing to determine if it is safe to consume.

Based on the consideration that, then POM suggested that the product was banned, and to the public not to consume products that cigarette alternative. "We want to say to the public, this product is not safe," said Danardi affirm. (Ant / Bey)

They may not put you at risk of lung cancer, but e-cigarettes — or electronic nicotine delivery systems — could be more dangerous for your health, the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) warned on Friday.

Danardi Sosrosumihardjo, the director of the agency’s narcotics and additive substances monitoring division, said the devices were a new concern.

Danardi said this could lead to uncontrollable nicotine concentrations in the body. “The concentration of nicotine that enters the body can get out of hand and the person can suffer nicotine poisoning,” he said.

What I find shocking is that Denardi apparently is ignorant of the published studies that show that users of e-cigarettes are not getting any nicotine from using e-cigarettes.

If nicotine poisoning were a big danger, why haven't any poisonings been reported? The devices have been in use for years.

My dentist has been trying to understand how I've broken so many teeth over the last year. I had no idea what the problem was until I read this report, now it's obvious I shouldn't have been chewing on these things, thank you medical community.

I should have been suspicious when he kept mentioning the mesh that the hygienist kept finding between my teeth.:D:D

How supposed medical professionals can get away with stating such garbage is quite beyond me. They are more dangerous than lung cancer? It borders on criminal to state such crap. Being that I know people, close acquaintances in fact, who have died of lung cancer from smoking, I am extremely offended by that comment. If the people of Indonesia have buttwipes like this looking out for their best interests, I truly feel for them.

Sure would be nice if you could ask them to provide scientific proof that it is safer to continue smoking for a couple more years than it would be to switch immediately to an e-cigarette.

BTW: Many people and organizations believe that an "appeal to authority" constitutes scientific proof. Policy statements by such organizations as WHO, FDA, CDC, etc. are not scientific proof. Scientific proof consists of measurable results from research studies, population surveys, and toxicology reports.

Agreed. Most of these people just don't provide any evidence. They just write away which frustrated me.
I tried writing comments about the article stated that they should get more evidence. But comments isn't showing up.
