I've been reading around this forum (which has lots of wonderful information, BTW) the past two nights...and while I have a better handle on terms, I'm still stuck on what to buy...and confused. I found it funny to find reference to 'information overload' somewhere in a list of 18 things, most of which linked to vast amounts of additional information :)

I've been smoking for too long, but over the years I've managed to get to a point where I can be sane (nicotine-wise) on 6-10 ultra light cigarettes a day. If my info is correct, that's 3-5 mg of nicotine a day? after reading other folks' posts, I feel like a wuss saying that.

In terms of the vaporizer, I was thinking of the 510 (the popular one around here)...but then I was also intrigued by the xhaler. I think 'throat hit' is important to me...but how much throat hit do ultra light cigarettes provide? Would something that gives a strong throat hit be too much for a weak smoker like me?

Then, I was confused about references to the 510 (and 801, etc) for use with the xhaler.

I'm thinking that, initially, I'd just like to buy a kit that has everything I need to get started and see how I like it...and I think I like the idea of cartridges better than pouring my own stuff...I'd like things to be simple!

I think I'd like a tobacco taste, but for me I think it is really more about the nicotine...I dont need much, but I need it! I'm a total closet smoker, and being able vape would make me feel so much better. Any flavor recommendations are welcome.

Thanks for listening, and any feedback is appreciated. I may not be able to visit here again until around this time tomorrow night, FYI.

Poytim:

Well, you got it right. Get a 510 (no box version) starter kit. I got mine from CIGNOT.com

You'll get two complete 510 ecigs, five cartridges, and a recharger.

I want you to remember--five cartridge will probably last you just a day or two. So, I'd recommend you get a bottle of cheap juice.

The kit (no box version) sells for around $35 bucks...the juice sells for around $9 to $20 bucks.

Do just what you said...give it a try.

Well, here's my thoughts on a few of your subjects:

6-10 ultra-lights is a pretty light smoker. I remember stealing my mom's Merit ultra-lights and it was like sucking air through a cotton-filled straw. Throat hit from that is minimal. Compare to stealing my dad's Winstons which was like getting a sandpaper-wrapped brick shoved down your throat. TH usually comes from nicotine level of the juice, though some flavors - or adding grain alcohol - will increase it. Also, 3-5mg is quite a lot - check out the "How much do you vape in a week/month" thread, most people do 2-3mg a day, 15-20mg/week. And most of the posters here really were hard-core smokers.

If you want a "simple, pop on a cart, no filling" experience, the KR808 is the most popular cartomizer here - that means, the atomizer is "built into" the cartridge and supposed to be disposable. They can still be re-filled, which you're likely to end up doing eventually since, well, it's much more economical anyways.

Most kits with pre-filled carts come with tobacco or menthol flavors, as it makes it easier to transition from cigs to PVs. Your flavor selection might be somewhat limited if you stick to pre-filled cartos as opposed to filling with bottled juice, but I'm a 510 user and haven't looked at cartos. Once you start looking for flavors, think of flavors you like. Coffee is a natural for me, since I'm a 6-cup-a-day drinker. My wife has a strict low-carb diet and so is seriously craving blueberry cheesecake. Ry4 is a popular flavor - tobacco and caramel (my next choice, probably) as is Atomic Fireball. I'm just going off the top of my head here, but you can find literally thousands of different flavors.

Finally...the XHaler is a battery mod with adapters so you can put a 901, or 801 atomizer and carts on it...though I've seen sometimes they'll throw in a cartomizer adapter. It's not really a complete kit. I would recommend starting off with a regular e-cig kit, get used to using that first, then go for battery mods.

I hope this was little rundown was helpful; I've only been vaping for three weeks but I've read almost everything on this board! :D And the rest of the crew will likely be more succinct than I can be.

Since I spent so much time on my reply...I'll second what oldtechno said.

I also got the nobox 510 kit from cignot, plus a 20ml bottle of Marlboro juice - total $52 shipped. Three weeks in and I'm loving it. I did get the juice at 24mg strength and a bottle of VG from the pharmacy then cut it 50/40/10 (water) so the juice is lasting me longer. And added straws to all my carts. But I'm a gadgeteer and addicted to tinkering with anything as soon as I get it, so keep that in mind and just use your gear as is to start.

Save yourself time and money and frustration. Buy a Janty EGo, a 510 to KR808 adapter from Cigtechs Electronic Cigarettes KR808, Joye 510, some 24 or 18 MG Cappuccino and 24 MG 555 cartomizers from Vapor4Life:: Because it's your life :: Electronic Cigarettes & Alternatives to Smoking and avoid multiple purchases and constant upgrading. You can then see for yourself if you like the 510 experience or the KR808 one most since your kit will come with 510 cartridges. After a year of vaping and many many purchases, I believe this is the fast route to total e cig satisfaction. If you don't like the cartomizers, sell them to me. Just because you smoked ultra lights does not mean ultra light cartridges will work. Start high and go down from there. Starting with low may turn you off immediately.

when i was in your shoes, i had the m401 recommended for me because it runs cooler (better if you want to vape the complex flavors apparently). unfortunately due to the Olympics i still haven't recieved my PV so i cant give you personal experience on the actual unit.
The customer service from mypvshop (where i ordered my pv from) was awesome, they had cheap replacement cart filler, and the ejuice is $3 for 5ml, or $7 for 15 ml. and they sell batteries and attys in batches of 5.

Thats my 2 cents. HTH

I tried a few other ecigs before I got my 510. IMO the 510 is the way to go. Prefilled carts are just too expensive to me. I don't like refilling carts either. Its too messy and time consuming so I just drip directly onto the atomizer. You can even buy a t-tip where you don't have to remove the cap each time. Good luck.

Thank you all so much for your time and thoughtful posts. I've ordered a 510 kit from cignot and some juice, and cartomizers from v4l in the flavors folks recommended. I tried to learn more about the janty ego, but it appeared to be out of stock?

I'm looking forward to getting trying this out, and again, I truly appreciate all of the feedback and thoughts!

I've never used the cartomizers, but I believe they won't fit the 510 without an adapter. I use the 510 cart and atty on my BB battery mod. Remember to read up on the different types of draw. If you try to inhale the first time like you would on a cigarette you'll probably end up coughing for 5 minutes. Only put juice in your carts until they look wet but not puddling and you should be good to go.

Correct the KR8 cartomizers will not fit the 510 without an adapter (510 battery to 901 adapter; $2.50 at madvapes)

Do yourself a favor and order an adapter from Cigtech they have the good 510 to kr808d-1 adapters. The one from Mad vapes don't allow enough air. Then get a 5 volt usb passthrough from mad vapes and some cartos and it is excellent vaping. I wouldn't change it for the world. You can get any 5 volt pv and use cartos but the way I explained is really cheap. Get the blank cartos and throw away the caps, use the condum with a hole, fill it with 19 drops and vape for hours. No need for syringes and all that junk and it's quick refill, lasts foever and vapes superbly.

thank you all, again - just started vaping today and it's great. I might even call it addicting :)

I got the 510 kit from cignot. charged up the batteries per the directions last night, and started with one of the cartridges that came with the kit. It was OK. Then, I went grocery shopping and got some pyramid teabags and did that 'mod' (thanks guy with the fedora for having that on youtube) with some of the basic starpuff juice...fantastic! I ordered some cartomizers from v4L, but I guess they dont take amex (even though the shopping cart allows you to), so they never came.

I also tried some PG cappuccinno flavored juice in another carto (is that the right term?) with the pyramid tea bag...not as nice as the starpuff was; seems like VG 'feels better' than PG?

I greatly appreciate this forum and the members, THANKS!

Congrats on getting your 510 today poytim! Vaping is great isn't it?! Wanted to let you know that unless you get an adapter for your 510, the V4L cartomizers will not fit your 510. The V4L is a 2 piece system where the cart and atomizer are one = Cartomizer and a battery. The 510, as you see, is a 3 piece system.....Cart, Atomizer and Battery. I also like the PTB cart mod and here is a trick. I can't explain it as you will understand, order some blank carts from Cignot with the PTB. I think there are 3 carts for $5. When you receive them, take the PTB out carefully and see how it has been folded and replicate it. The absolute best mod and much more consistent than the other PTB how to's. Just a tip! Good Luck and Happy Vaping!

I got a Vapor King from V4L - love it. Easy... satisfying.
Loved it so much I also got an EGo... which is similar to the 510...
(Did I mention I'm just 10 days in?)

Either way, seems that you can't go wrong with a 510 or VK (Kr808)

Just make your first buy from one of the reputable people promoted on this site.

Thanks for that; the good folks at V4L flagged my order and didnt send me the wrong thing knowing it was wrong! Now I'm hunting for somewhere to get sampler packs, a PCC and carrying case, blank cartos, and maybe some other odds and ends. These are not available at cignot (as far as I can see), and it's been challenging to find a single vendor who has everything I feel like I need at reasonable prices.

Thank you all, again - two days 'analogue free' :)

It is hard to find a single vendor for all ;-) Here's some suggestions:

samplers - well 10ml bottles:
10 ml eJuice

PCC:
Joye 510 PCC

great carrying case:
Soft Case - Widow's Beadwork

blank carts (flat tips):
Joye510 Cartridge Blank (Flat tip) - Widow's Beadwork

carto is short for cartomizer. cart is short for cartridges - which is what you have now. ;-)

odds and ends:
510 Passthrough

A passthrough is good for saving on battery recharges while you're stationary.
