Hi, I have just been reading Baditude's wonderful threads about batteries after my husband's latest purchase and we are so much wiser now...just wish we'd read this before the battery purchase!

When he bought his itaste VTR the seller recommended Panasonic NCR 18650A unprotected batteries, but he was expecting them to last longer than they have. He started vaping yesterday, after charging the first one, and with regular (not chain smoking) vaping, it seems to have lasted about 10.5 hours. I'm now thinking that he should have bought "high drain" batteries, maybe the NCR18650PD? Would this battery last him longer?

He loves the vaping experience he gets from the VTR by the way, but he's hoping to find a battery that will last him a lot longer. Any advice please?

Thank you for your time :)

Generally speaking, all other things being equal, batteries with a higher mAh rating will last longer. So a 2000 mAh battery, in theory, should last longer than a 1500 mAh battery.

Edit to add: Also keep in mind when using a variable device, if you set the voltage and/or power higher, your battery life will decrease.

Thanks for the speedy replies guys! His previous device used a Vision spinner battery which was 1100 mAh and this one is a 3100 mAh so, theoretically, it should last longer but he was getting at least 10 hours with his Spinner. I think both the NCR18650PF and the NCR18650PD are in the list of recommended high drain batteries compiled by Baditude on this site so maybe he will get longer if he invests in one of these? We'll have to try it I think.

The Panasonic NCR18650A 3100mah battery is not a high drain battery. It also has only a 6.8 amp rating and has high internal resistance. These are low drain, low amp, high capacity batteries best suited for flashlights, not a mod. Most of this battery's higher capacity is not in the useful range of a regulated mod. The same holds true of the Panasonic NCR18650B 3400 mah battery.

The VTR is a regulated VV/VW mod which uses pulse width modulation (PWM) and buck boost circuitry to make higher voltage from a 3.7 volt battery. To do this optimally, it requires a high drain battery with 7 - 10 amps continuous discharge rate (CDR) and low internal resistance. The following batteries are high drain batteries with at least 10 amps CDR.

  • AW IMR 18650 2000mah 10Amp
  • Panasonic CGR18650CH (IMR/hybrid) 2250mAh 10A
  • Panasonic/Orbtronic NCR18650BD 3200mAh 10A <--- new battery on the market
  • Panasonic/Orbtronic NCR18650PF 2900mAh 10A
  • Panasonic/Orbtronic NCR18650PD 2900mAh 10A

* For a more technical explanation concerning why regulated mods require high drain batteries with higher amps and low internal resistance, go to the thread in this link: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/provape/524874-question-tech-engineers-provape.html

** You don't need a 30 amp battery for a regulated mod (although they will work in one), that's just a lot of unnecessary amps and would be overkill. 30 amp batteries are for use with mechanical mods using RBA's with sub-ohm coils.

*** Not all 18650 batteries are the same length or diameter, unfortunately. The VTR is rather picky about battery dimensions (length & diameter) and if they will fit in the battery chamber and be able to close the battery compartment door. I don't own a VTR so I can't confirm which batteries do or don't fit into the VTR. Perhaps do a Google search.

Im using the NCR 18650PD in my VTR and depending on how long he holds button down and what voltage and wattage he should be able to go at least a whole day per charge. I can go about a 1 1//2 days on one charge and I usually will charge while still in the yellow. I found battery charges much faster if you dont use into the red light which is fine but again depending on settings I found it taxing on the battery. Whatever you do just remember to get 2 of which ever batteries you get. I got both my PDs from an ebay vendor out of Utah for less than 20$. Good luck

I didn't realize this about the 3400mah Panasonic in the VTR. I put one in my VTR thinking I could go longer between charges but that has not been the case. I was quite disappointed in the battery life and now I know why. Thanks!
