cheers floatingtrem.............I was abit scared to do this...but what the hell.....one of my...first t3 I got always leaked...no matter what I did ...so I given it a good soak put away.......I had it pulled apart...so the coil wick could dry well..........so I followed your pics...old coil wick slid out easy...new cotton taper..also slid in ok..it fired with a few juice drops...put back together...leaked after a few vapes..pulled apart again....flipped cap....still leaked...pulled apart again added..one top wick....and yes you ripper it vapes great....taste only took a little while to come through...so cheers....yes I know there only a few bucks to replace...but every cent you save..goes for something else us vapers need.........plus it was more of the fun.......just seeing if I could do it....:thumb:

I always put top wicks, otherwise it leaks. Two seems to be the magic number. I do it out of unbleached cotton thread, the one used for cooking food.

I just tried this after reading this thread last night before bed. I have a ziploc bag full off old T3 heads. I whipped one out, took all the old burnt looking wick out. Didn't have cotton balls (having my fiance get some today) so I whipped out some Q-Tips since they have the same cotton on them I hope. Pulled off a nice string from there and pulled it through the coil. Clipped off both sides and fluffed. Dropped on some 100% VG juice. Gave it a test fire and it worked. Then put it back on the T3 and boom works fine :D No off taste, no gurgle so far (that is why the head was in the used T3 bag) and enjoying it! Kinda sucks I just bought 10 new heads last night lol.

Finally decided to rewick my 20 week old T3 head with cotton twine.

I started pulling out the old silica wick and found it had almost disintegrated. I began picking out the tiny pieces using a sharp pointed pair of tweezers (how can it be a pair when there's only one?) and accidentally snagged a coil and pulled it out of shape. I very gently (well, as gently as my 73 year old hands will allow) pushed it back in shape.

Then I decided to do a dry burn before I put in the cotton twine and "POW" the coil popped like a fuse. I guess the plus side of the coil was against the housing of the head. Thought I'd killed the battery (an eGo-C from Joyetech) too, but after putting it on the charger it came back to life. I guess the protection circuit worked the way it was supposed to.

Oh, well, for a head to last 20 weeks I guess I really can't complain too much...

I'll try to be more careful next time.

I have also been doing this for about a month with my T3's. I just wanted to try something besides silica etc...I go about a week before I change out the cotton (I'm not a heavy vaper) and I find it much better! I use a rolled cotton wick through the coil and then another on top. If I don't put one on top I also get a little gurgling etc...I just like the idea of not using silica and the organic cotton rounds I get are so cheap. I think I might of used 2 cotton rounds in this one month. At this pace this one pack of cotton will last me a few years if I need it too.

I don't put any cotton on top of the coil. I think it kills the flavor. If you're still leaking/gurgling without it, then you didn't stuff enough cotton into the coils. If you put in too much, you'll end up getting a dry hit here or there, but I didn't have any issues until I really crammed the cotton in there.

OK, so I've been getting very curious about cotton wicks, and since I'm still waiting on wire for my AGA, I decided this would be a good way to test it.

So out comes an old T3 head. Before putting old heads in the "backup drawer" I always clean and dry them well. That way if I should need one, it's "ready to go".

I'm not however, using cotton balls, but rather cheesecloth strands. It's VERY easy to fine tune (8 threads too much? Try 6... no guessing). First, I pulled out the silica wick and dry burned the coil. Then I pulled a single, doubled-over strand through the coil first, then looped about 6 strands through that, and pulled it back through. This made sure it was NICE and tight. Snipped to length. I added about 10 more strands on top as flavor wicks. It's easier to remove wicks if it's too dry than it is to pull it apart and add more if it gurgles. Threw it on my VAMO to check resistance, and got a short. Wiggled the coil, checked, wiggled the coil, checked, until I came up with the standard 2.6-2.7 ohms.

Reassembled, filled with juice, and wow! I'm vaping strong juice at the moment (Vape Sales Black Cherry Tabaky) so I got no cotton taste whatsoever, just good vapor and GREAT flavor (for a T3). I'm sold. No dry hits, no gurgles. Boy oh boy! Unless I blow a coil, I don't see myself buying new T3 coils anytime soon, I'll be thoroughly washing/dryburning and rewicking with cheesecloth. It really is that great!

If anyone is interested, I'll re-wick another tomorrow and take some pictures. If no one is interested though, I'll skip it :) Floating, thanks for the idea, much appreciated!

Just found this thread after rebuilding heads for 3 weeks. Wish I found it earlier :).

I just wanted to toss this out there. I am a chain vaper. I noticed if I chain vaped on cotton ball wicks that I would burn out the cotton after a day or less. I found I had much better luck w/ unbleached organic makeup pad strips that I twist. I think the difference here is the density of the cotton and less fuzz contribute to the durability of the wick.

I've still got cotton ball wick on my vivi nova but I've not even bothered to go back to the nova since I rebuilt my T3 w/ makeup pad 3 days ago.

I typically use it on a Joye Ego or Ego Twist. Also have an Evic but I leave it at home. 32 AWG Kanthal A-1 with 4/5 wrap usually yields between 1.7-2.0 ohms. Perfect for an ego :).

**Edit**

Just wanted to add that I've also tried 400 SS mesh wick and cheese cloth. I just got some Aunt Lydia's bamboo crochet thread in the mail today. I will boil and dry that tonight and give it a go tomorrow.

I just rebuilt one with cotton ball as a trial, and you guys are right: much better flavor than the stock wicks. And I'm testing it with liquids that I KNOW to be weak on flavor, no matter what you throw at them.

I'll be going in for some makeup pads or cheesecloth (and some 32AWG nichrome, if I can find it), this coil may be due for a rebuild since I'm sure it's not optimal now. I had to adjust and fiddle with it, since I didn't remove the coil but just rolled the cotton and pulled through with a loop of thread. I DID use a little more cotton on top of the coil on mine, only because I tend to vape mine nearly dry, and I want to minimize the gurgling when it gets low.

But, yeah, this works, folks. If you have a head that the wicks are fraying, burnt, or falling out beyond repair, pull it all out and replace with cotton ball. Cheap, easy, and you know you have some.

...Yes, you do...
