I've just started using the e-cig. I really want to quit using analogs as I can feel it killing me slowly. But my wife asked the question, "Will our insurance premiums drop now?" My insurance company already knows I'm a smoker and of course my rates are higher because of it. They said that if I quit smoking I can in a year get a blood test to confirm it. But is what they are looking for just nicotine in the blood or other stuff also? Any body from the insurance world know if e-cigs are considered non-smoker?

Thanks

Wow, a blood test huh? I was going to start saying what the heck kind of insurance do you have that this would be an issue until I noticed your in canada.

From what I've heard and read, blood testing for cigarette smoke looks for levels of carbon monoxide and not nicotine but you should be able to just ask "What are they testing for in my blood?" and you should get an answer.

Thanks for the replies. It won't really matter to at least a year any way so I'll just wait for a little while and see how everything goes. The test has more to do with the amount of insurance than anything else. If all you want is 100,000 they don't ask any questions. Much more and they want to make sure your not going to kick off the day after they sell you the policy.

Hello and welcome to the forum! It is not just in Canada that some work places and insurance companies are testing for tobacco use. This is misleading in that you CAN'T test for tobacco use so from my understanding it's a test for cotinine that your body produces when there is nicotine in your system. The bad thing is that even if you have quit smoking but are using the patch, gum or an e-cig, you will still test positive for cotinine. Doesn't seem fair, does it? Please check the thread titled "Nicotine" for more info on this subject.
