i am interested in seeing what is out there. everyone reads and hears of the popular mods. but i am interested in what is not so popular and GOOD mods. As i am looking to step up to one and want to be a little different.

Really depends on your budget and how much time you invest in the research. Obviously the popular mods are popular because they are "good" mods (in some cases), but finding something different is definitely a challenge. I recently purchased my first nice mod and I couldn't be more excited. But to get to the "buy" button, I stayed up late. I googled. I stalked countless vendors. I sent emails. I watched reviews. I asked a lot of questions. I refused to buy a provari because I wanted something different, even though "buy a provari" was something I heard countless times.
Are you looking for mechanical?
Are you looking for electronic?

I wish you luck in your search- I know I was in the same position as you for awhile. Just remember that most recommended usually means most owned or most unavailable, but there are definitely some mods out there that are not as well known and still offer excellent quality and craftsmanship.

Being in America... Maybe the NZonic. It's not as popular here as it is in other parts of the world, It's built in the Philippines and is every bit the quality of the more popular Greek mods.

I'm loving mine... It a high quality, 100% mechanical mod, that is telescopic and can fit everything from an 18350 ~18650+kick

Here it is with an IOG-L on top....
(It's normally just regular stainless steel, but I torched mine to get the colored oxidization)
