I was readinig about pg on wikipedia and read this: Studies conducted in 1942 by Dr. Oswald Hope Robertson of University of Chicago's Billings Hospital showed vaporized propylene glycol inhalation in laboratory mice may prevent pneumonia, influenza, and other respiratory diseases. Additional studies in monkeys and other animals were undertaken to determine longterm effects, especially the potential for accumulation in the lungs. After a few months of treatment, no ill effects were discovered

That is why they put PG in the ventilators at hospitals. It's a humectant and helps to kill bacteria via dehydration.

There's a thread on here somewhere about that study - I believe it was published in Time magazine. I'm about to start getting ready for work, so don't have time to do a search for it right now.
