Hello ECF! I've been lurking and reading reading reading for the past several weeks, and wanted to thank the forum for the wealth of great information I have found here! I hope that this post can also help other new members who are looking for info on some "starter" devices, based on my noob experience.
I just started vaping about a month ago. I've been smoking analogs for about 20 years. I was a "binge and purge" kind of smoker - I'd be able to go a few days without, and then "binge" on a pack or even a pack and a half. I never smoked in the mornings, never smoked in the house or car, but I'd chain smoke sitting on my deck, while on the phone or reading or entertaining company. I didn't actually make up my mind to QUIT, but thought I'd give vaping a try after some friends started to dabble. I figured if I did quit, then great! But I will be honest, I have never tried to quit and didn't want to set myself up for failure and disappointment (both from myself and from my family).
Here's my vaping story so far:
My first purchase was a Joytech eRoll. I wanted something as close to an analog as I could get, with no manual button, and with the ability to use different ejuices. This fit the bill perfectly and I think it is a great little device, both for someone trying to transition from/quit analogs, and even once past that point, as a great portable device to take out and about. The downsides I found using it as my only device were that I was constantly swapping out the cartridges and the batteries. Not a huge burden, but I guess I liked vaping more than I thought I would and found myself pretty much vaping all day! The eRoll is much better suited to use as a true analog replacement - like when you are out and pop out for a smoke or two with a friend. For that purpose, it is perfect. I don't think it is a practical device for vaping for more than 20-30 minutes at a time.
A few days later, when visiting a local B&M shop to sample juices, I saw a Joyetech eCab and I loved the look of it, especially in red. Even though it is very similar to the eRoll, I bought a kit with the matching case anyway.
I also think that the eCab is a great little device for someone first starting. It is manual, but I quickly learned that wasn't as big of a deal as I originally thought. It also has the advantage of being compatible (with an eCab-510 adaptor) with clearomizers (I bought the Kanger esmart), which hold more juice than the tiny cartridges so I didn't have to refill nearly as often. The battery also lasted longer than the eRoll, but certainly not all day.
After vaping off of the eRoll and eCab for a few weeks (and swapping, refilling, and recharging like crazy while doing so), I purchased both a Vision Spinner and a Vapor4Life Dial-A-Volt - both 900mAhs. I am so glad that I did! These batteries are both great for vaping all day, and both have the variable voltage. The Spinner is manual, and the Dial-A-Volt I bought is automatic. Although by now, the resistance to manuals that I originally started out with is gone.
To go with the Spinner, I bought an Anyvape Davide mini glassomizer. I love the fact that this has a glass tank, but I'm getting some gurgling and tiny splashes of juice in my mouth. I think the gurgling might be due to the coil, because after doing some research here I swapped one out, and the gurgling and splashing stopped. But then I put in yet another coil (the Davide comes with three), and I am getting gurgling and splashing again. I just ordered 5 replacement coils, so when those arrive I will switch again and see if that stops these annoyances. I would still recommend the Davide mini, although now I am considering trying the ProTank mini so I can compare the two.
With the Dial-A-Volt I am using these cartomizers, which work just fine, but for some reason I find that I am more partial to a glass tank than the acrylic tank of these cartomizers. But they certainly do their job, and I've even bought some single coil cartomizers to swap out with the dual coils that come included with the tank.
So that's where I am at right now. I've also purchased a bunch of different juices, but I think this post is long enough already.
Here's a pic of my little "family" - from left to right: eRoll; eCab with adaptor and Kanger esmart; Vision Spinner 900 mAhs with Davide mini; Dial-A-Volt automatic 900 mAhs with 3.5 ml tank.
