Hey Paul glad to see ya making headway!for sure most ppl using reo's and subohming are smart enuf to not use junk batts...I said most so if you don't protect them from themselves you most definitely will have to have a disclaimer of some typ to protect yourself.cant wait to see your final final of this mod.--------Rick

Look at the two batteries above. Both are Panasonic batteries, but the green one has the negative terminal well insulated, and the gray one has the negative terminal relatively exposed.

Since the mod body is aluminum, with only a relatively thin layer of oxidation, I'm a worried that if one were to use the gray battery (with the negative terminal exposed on the side), it might by pass the fuse and conduct with the mod body. I wonder if it's necessary to add a insulating part inside the mod to prevent this.

However, the majority of batteries I've seen have the negative terminal well insulated so it might not be necessary, as long as I tell users not to use the battery like the gray one. What do you think?

"CAUTION: REMOVE PIZZA FROM BOX BEFORE CONSUMING". Someone was smart enough to order pizza but obviously had never encountered a cardboard box.
Did you know silica gel, the stuff to avoid moisture that always has warnings and skull and cross bones is non toxic?

It is like vg and just sets off asthma in a limited few people

Can't wait for that final design.... When will you be taking orders ?

I will be taking orders when the mod is ready to be shipped. I've been busy this last week. Next week I will get all the minor details worked out, and make a final prototype in a few days. Then I will test it myself for a bit (drop test, etc...). After I'm satisfied, it will go into production. There are a few parts of the mod that requires a mold, and that can take at least 2 weeks.

So, we are getting there, but I don't want to promise a certain date. But I will periodically provide updates.

Like someone else has mentioned, I believe it's my job to make the design "idiot proof". In the original mod pics (on the first page), I already have insulation inside the mod body that's part of the piece that holds the negative spring. But I will need to add another insulation piece to the mod door as well since that conducts too.

There really aren't that much room to work with, not as much as you think. The thickness of the door and the body are around 3mm, and add in the battery diamater of 18mm, plus 1 mm of clearance, and equates to 25mm of mod thickness. This is the most I want to go as far as thickness is concerned, at this point, even a 1 or 2mm increase in width will make the mod appear fat, and I want it to appear slim and sexy.

Probably have to decrease the thickness of the door and the body at the area where I want to add an insulating piece.

well, pretty much all the minor issues have been solved. I haven't had a chance to make those changes in CAD. FYI, I'm going back to school now to get my Masters and this is around midterm time. While I hoped to show the concept sooner, the exams have been eating up my time. Thankfully, spring break starts next friday and then I can spend a couple of days finalizing the changes in CAD, and I will show the concept here next weekend or the following Monday.

Then, I will make a final prototype (takes a few days), test it myself for a bit, and then make the necessary mold. Again, sorry for the delay and thanks for your patience. Like I said, when I started this post last September, I totally didn't foresee all the issues that will come up. I got over confident and even tried to make a 2nd mod at the same time. And then once the course work picked up the pace (I also had an co op at the time), I really couldn't find much time to work on the mod. The winter break did provide me some time and I spent it on solving the 510 issue.

But at least I'm keeping you guys updated, and even though I won't be checking the forum daily, you guys are in my mind all the time. This first mod of mine is really a learning experience for me. In return for your patience, I will price it even lower than what I had planned originally. Hopefully you guys would all get a nice mod at a great price, and I end up with some great mod building experience, and then I will tackle on that 2nd mod of mine (which will be more higher end and innovative).

Excellent news on the Masters, paul! You will not regret getting an advanced degree, ever.
