Introduction / Quick question ( Halo Triton Wick burns ) need help!

Hello. Today was my second day of vaping. well technically it isnt because ive used 2 different e-cigs the mystic brand about a year ago and tried the gamucci brand how ever both failed to help me stay off analog cigarettes so finally i decided id rather pay now and save in the long run so i did some research and recently purchased a Halo Triton starter kit. I received it in the mail yesterday morning and haven't touched an analog since.

The first day went well but i noticed on the bottom wick it seemed like it was starting to burn in the hole area of the coil on the bottom wick. I didnt think much of it and just hoped it was e-liquid and continued to clean it. Today i woke up and refilled my tank and it didnt taste like burnt smoke or anything but tonight I cleaned out my tank and checked to see if it was burnt and the spot inside the coil on the bottom wick has a slight brown/black spot on it. I'm pretty sure it is the start of a burn mark.

I am a bit worried since ive only had my e-cig unit for 2 days and the wicks already burned so i have a few questions since i'm pretty much new to the vaping experience.

The battery I have for my unit is 650 MaH

1. Should this be happening so early on? throughout the day (yesterday and today) i kept moving the liquid around to make sure the wicks are moist; but it didnt seem to help.

I really don't want to switch to my extra tank because I assumed the first one would last at least a week or two so i didnt buy extras.

2. If it is a burn mark would i be okay to still use it? At least until I am able to purchase and receive extra wicks

I was looking on the Halo website and saw they sell extra coils and was wondering whats the difference with the coil resistance? (could this be the reason why it is burnt? and does battery MaH play a part in it? (the 2 batteries that came with the kit are 650MaH ) and the liquid i have been using is the Midnight Apple (bought off the halo website)

3. What Coil resistance should i be purchasing for a 650mah battery that wont burn the wick so fast.

Any insight and help would be greatly appreciated and i hope to learn a lot from this forum and become more accustomed to vaping!

You can usually expect to get a week or two out of a head. It does vary, and in this case the main things that affect how long it lasts are:

*coil resistance - Lower resistance will run hotter and produce more vapour
*e-liquid - High VG juices and thick heavy juices will gunk up the coil faster
* How you vape - taking longer puffs and doing it more frequently will heat the head more and possibly give dryer hits if you vape more than the wick is able to bring the liquid to the coil

There are other factors that are out of your control as well such as how well the coil is made. A badly made coil may not be contacting the wick properly, or may be too tight on the wick affecting how it wicks the liquid and so on. Sometimes you just get a dud one. I don't think that's the case here, but you really need to have spares for everything, especially spare heads. Things can go wrong when you least expect it.

That is the capacity of the battery, which means the higher the mAh the longer it will last on a particular coil. What you really need to know in this case the voltage output. I'm not familiar with the Halo but it is likely to be either 3.4V or 3.7V

Once it starts tasting burnt, it will always have that taste. It may get less and it may get that you don't notice it so much, but the burning has already happened. I note that the mark is on the flavour wick which you have pulled out a bit. The coil is actually wrapped around the other wick and that will surely be more burnt than the flavour wick. It's not a good idea to pull the flavour wick out the side by the way, it can pull the coil and cause problems. The correct way to inspect the coil is to take the rubber cap off, pull the top piece off the head and then remove the flavour wick so you can see the coil. A wick should not be burnt so quickly, however discolouration can start happening immediately. It may be due to the type of liquid. You need to rely more on taste than inspection - if we changed the head every time it got a brown mark on it we'd be spending more time changing heads than vaping on them.

It looks like you might have to, because if you can taste a smokey/burnt ashtray type flavour the coil and wick is pretty well had it. You can do things like clean and dry burn the head - you can probably google methods on this or open another thread with that question. It's discussed quite often and you may get a lot of opinions on this.

There's nothing to stop you using, though obviously it is not ideal and the vapour production won't be as good. I think you should try the other one and don't pull the wick out the side this time, just trust it is OK from the taste. That is the best judge. Keep the puffs shorter and don't hit it constantly. Take your time and let the wicks soak up the juice a little between puffs.

It's not the capacity as stated previously, it's the voltage that is the important factor. Different resistances are provided for different styles of vaping and different juices, but generally the higher the resistance the cooler the vape and the longer the heads are likely to last. If you're not sure then get a range of heads and see which works best for you.

Covered in the previous, but if the battery is 3.7V though, I'd recommend something around 2.2 ohms as being reasonably safe. 2.4 ohms or 2.6 ohms would be safer again but will produce less vapour. See if you can find out what voltage the battery is outputting.

Wow thank you for the detailed response. I will go ahead and use the spare tank and order some replacement heads while i'm at it.
And i def will not mess with the flavor wick again! Going to do some research on dry burning as well.

OK, just did a bit of quick research. The halo 650 mAh battery is unregulated, which means the output voltage will vary from 4.2 volts when freshly charged down to 3.3 volts when it is flat.

I believe this is your problem. Firing say a 2.2 ohm coil on a fresh battery for too long may result in burning the liquid on the coil. I'd still recommend the 2.2 ohm coils, but you will need to be very careful when the battery is fresh. Take shorter puffs to prevent burning, or pulse the fire button instead of just holding it down. This will prevent the coil from getting too hot. This resistance coil will work fine when the battery voltage drops to 3.9 volts, and will continue to work OK down to about 3.4 volts. Once you notice the vapour production dropping off too much put the battery on charge.

Oh wow okay thats good to know. I actually picked up some 3.0-3.2 ohm coils as well. I might give those a try . i was saving them for when i order a VV battery next week.

Discoloration at the center of the wick around the coil is not unusual...depending on the type of liquid and how much you use in a day. As long as it produces vapor and tastes OK, keep using it. The dark discoloration will likely never go away, but you can brighten it a bit when cleaning by soaking the head in vodka.

I have used 1.8, 2.0 and 2.5 heads...but I prefer 1.8. Be aware that these are standard T2 heads and are cheaper other places (although they are short wick versions).

I came here for the EXACT same problem (same starter kit, same battery, same burning). I'm new to vaping and I've noticed that I've burned up two cartomizers in the last 4 days (every other day replacement) and knew that something had to be wrong... I was nervous of using fluids that were NOT made by halo but I only like one of their flavors so I actually thought for a bit that this was the problem lol. Thank you for all the useful information!
