Iowa has a ban against smoking on all government property... (not sure when, nor any other specifics)

My husband watched yesterday as an adult couple pulled their motorcycle into a rest area in Iowa. A trooper pulled in behind them as they lit up cigarettes. He wrote each of them a citation.

Wonder if the officer left his car running while he did this? In the interest of public air quality and such...

like I said, I don't think this happens all the time, it was probably just a lazy ... cop that just woke up from his 2 hour nap he took when he was supposed to be taking radar and needed to write a ticket asap.
It has gone too far when there is a law that even makes this possible.

I found this thread hard to believe until I researched it-

Iowa’s Smoking Ban: One Year Later » Ames Progressive.org

On July 1, 2008, after several months of political maneuvering at the Statehouse, the Iowa Smokefree Air Act was to become law. In the interest of public health, it would prohibit cigarette use at nearly all places of employment and state-owned properties and their grounds, a restriction praised by many but also troubling to many tavern frequenters and a number of business owners – particularly those operating bars – worried about a drop in clientele and frustrated over an exemption for casinos.

If that is accurate, it not only made smoking illegal in the rest area, but also on state roads! I'm sure it hasn't been taken to that extreme, YET, but how long before someone gets pulled over for smoking while driving.

At least there's some hope-

Smoking Ban News - Smoking Lobby Forum for Smokers Rights and Smoking Bans

If I were an Iowa resident (and I won't be going to Iowa any time soon) and a smoker, I'd establish everyone that supports this legislation and vote them out of office. A united front by all smokers and tobacco and nicotine users would just about control every election.
