Please only answer if you have tried both. I am a heavy user (3 ml per day). My first e-cig was a 901 and I've stuck with that because it worked for me. But I notice that the 510's are just a bit more expensive and I'm wondering if they are more durable and thus last longer. The 901 pass through that I bought was a very cheap item and broke after 2 months. When I went looking for something that was better quality I couldn't find one, but did notice that the 510 pass throughs looked much sturdier.

So, should I make a change to the 510's?

"better than" is in the eye (or should I say throat) of the beholder. Both models are excellent and popular ... and are the two most common fittings for mods. Neither is better made or more reliable (on average) than the other and they are comparably priced. You can get a two battery, two atomizer 510 kit for as little as $35 (and that is Joye 510, not one of the clones). Most 901 kits (which may be a few dollars cheaper than many 510 kits) come with only one atomizer.

The 510 is wildly popular. Discussions about it (and all the devices that use its atomizer) dominate the forums. The 901 no longer is as popular, but still has its place and many people prefer it. It's vapor generation is not as voluminous as the 510, but I get more TH from the 901.

There is more variation in sturdiness, quality, and effectiveness among individual units of the same model than there is between the 510 or 901. No e-cig manufacturer has very good quality control.

Other than obvious differences in size, shape, and appearance, the most significant difference between models is the feel of the vape: due primarily to the atomizer and secondarily to the power of the battery. With the advent of inexpensive adapters a few months ago, you can use virtually any atomizer on any battery (including mods). My favorite non-mod skinny battery is the Kr8: 280 mAh and true 3.7V (e.g., the 510 battery is 3.1V, the eGO is 3.4V). You can use the 901 atty on it without any adapter ... and, of course, use Kr8 cartomizers. Penstyle (e.g., 801) and 510 attys, among others, will work with adapters. In fact, my favorite non-mod configuration is the penstyle atomizer on a Kr8 battery.

So try out other atomizers, e.g., the 510, and see how you like them. You can get a full kit or just an atomizer and adapter. Once you settle in on the atomizer(s) you like best, you can get bigger and better batteries for it.

There are two primary differences between the DSE 901 and the Joye 510. First, the 901 kit battery lasts a bit longer than the 510. Second and more important, imo, is that the atomizers have different ohm ratings. The Joye 510 atty is rated 2.1-2.3 ohms and the DSE 901 is rated at 3.4 ohms. When running on the same voltage battery, the Joye 510 will run a bit hotter - which is going to mean more vapor but it can decrease flavor in some of the lighter flavors - fruits, berries, vanilla whereas the cooler running 901 brings out those flavors. Conversely, the 510 tends to enhance stronger flavors with the heat - tobacco, cigar, french pipe, coffee/cappuccino, etc. and sometimes the 901 doesn't bring out the full flavor of those stronger flavors. Ymmv, of course, since much taste is subjective but the physics going on can be an objective factor here and I've experienced all of the above - my black currant flavor tastes better on the 901 (or 801 - even cooler atty) and the 901 doesn't pick up all the nuances of the Habana Reserve which is my top flavor on the 510.

There is also a difference in many of the kits - the DSE 901 in many cases comes with only 1 atomizer and 2 batts whereas the Joye 510 kit almost always has 2 batts and 2 attys. Hence some prices for the 510 can be higher but at cignot.com their $35 for a 510 no box starter kit beats some of the 901 kits I've seen - and still has the 2 atomizers.

Because most of my flavors tend toward the stronger flavors, I use a 510 atty on 90% of my ecigs/mods. But for those other flavors I use either the 901 or 801 or both.

One thing about the Joye 510 (and highly recommend the Joye) is that is the most popular model here and the atomizer is the most popular atomizer for mods, so if you try it and don't like it, it would be a quick sale in the classified forum and you wouldn't have to discount it 50% to sell it.

If you don't want to spend the $35, you can get an auto 'disposable' - Q510 - at madvapes for $9.99 and the one I have has over 50 recharges - although the box says 'at least 3' so ymmv on that but all I've seen reported are getting into the 20+ recharges from it.

OR... you could get a 901 to 510 adapter and get a 510 atty and try it out that way. Although depending on where you get the adapter and the atty, the disposable is still likely to be less money ;-) Plus if you like that, you can use the atty and the carts with a regular 510 kit. The charger is different - you'd still have to charge the auto batt that comes with the kit on that 'disposable' charger. And you couldn't use that charger with your regular 510 batts.

And if you are willing to spend more than the $35, I'd suggest going right to the eGo/Tornado. The 510 kit batts will last about 1-2 hours before needing a recharge. The two batteries that come in the eGo/tornado kit (again, cignot has them) go for 6-6.5 hours, so the regular need for a passthrough and a PCC for the regular 510 is bypassed by the better batteries and they produce more vapor than the 510 which for a cig style mini, is already the top vapor producer in that size because of the lower ohmed atomizer. Of course now there are Low Resistance (LR) atomizers and cartomizers from which to choose and now even 510 cartomizers. Again, if you go 'eGo' I suggest staying with Joye - Janty, Totally Wicked, cignot, heaven gifts... just to name a few that I know sell the Joye models.
