Is dry burning really such a good idea...?

Hi all from Cape Town.... thanx for a great forum - just started vaping a week ago and loving it!

I am using an eGo-T with a CE4 cartomizer and have been going thru some video's on YouTube looking at how to clean/maintain it. I see that a lot of guys out there just wash the thing out and then "Dry" burn the system before refilling and vaping again....

Is that really such a good idea?
I would think that to get more mileage out of the CE4 it would be better to dismantle.... clean and dry all components well before using again.... or is this an old trick and I am still too new at this game?

It's fine to rinse and dry-burn a few times, that is if you're refilling with the same/similar juice. If you're swapping flavors, it's best to do a thorough cleaning...some flavors just don't play well with others. After a while, you'll learn what works for you and the longevity of your equipment. Before I began rebuilding my own coils/wicks, I would use a atty head for a bout a week tops before thoroughly cleaning them. I'd do this once or twice before replacing the head.

You can simply rinse the wicks/coil really well, dry it off a bit, and then dry burn the coils to get rid of excess water. You can pulse it a few times til it glows and that should be sufficient. The first few hits will be light of vapor, since there'll still be a bit of water to evaporate.

I used CE4's for a few months last year and loved them. I've since moved on to other devices. I used to rinse and dry burn every 2 - 5 tank fulls depending on how 'gunky' the juice I was using in them was. I found dry burning to be the only way to really clean the coil and wicks. Letting them get too dirty is bad because they become too gunked up to easily clean.

A few points. Dry burn often; it will be easy to do and your CE4's will last a long time.

Don't hold the power on too long or you'll melt the coil and that's the end of it.

Do dry burn to a completely free glowing coil. If it takes a lot of dry burning (you let it go too long) you will find the CE4 getting warm. Take breaks to avoid it getting too hot.

I once bought a few CE4's that were a real bargain . The wicks in them did not tolerate being dry burned. I stuck with Vision brand after that and never had another issue.

Good luck with it!

I have over-done the dry burn to the point where the silica strands fused together and became brittle, the wick itself broke in half when touched, not just a few strands. It won't "burn" like cotton or other organic fiber wicks, but silica can only take so much punishment. It has a specified heat tolerance, but after it goes through a few dry burn cycles it won't be as flexible as it was. As mentioned above, long pulses can make too much heat for too long and you'll just destroy the wick and/or "pop" the coil.

More importantly, the majority (99.99%) of clearomiser manufacturers use silica wicks which you can dry burn a few times at least. You're not vaping pure water, there will be carbon buildup on the coil that vaporizes the e-liquid. A dry burn will essentially "burn" the carbon buildup to nearly nothing, but as mentioned above that won't mean it's magically gone completely. Dry burning can make a coil and the wick near it much cleaner, but it only helps for a limited number of cycles. No matter what, you'll need a new head eventually (if it is replaceable).

The longest you want to do a dry burn in my opinion is around three seconds or so. If you over do it as others have stated you will fuse the silica and make it brittle. But I've dry burned my coils and no harm done. I still dry burn my eroll heads when I'm cleaning them. There's really no reason to replace these things the first time they get gunked up. Also if your using sweet or dark liquids your coils will get build up faster. Hope this helps.

There's clips on youtube about rebuilding CE5's and their ilk, works fine - even for the finemotorically challenged like me .

Have some here going on 10 months with a good number of rebuilds under their belt. Eventually these little rubber grommets will become to worn, but there's spare coil heads...

If only I could get that much mileage out of a car :/

I've only dry burned mine a couple of times. Didn't seem to hurt it, but a vodka soak seems to work just as well. I get those little "airplane" sized bottles 2 for $1 at the liquor store. Finally found a use for all the shot glasses that my husband has and never uses.

I have several protank/evod atomizers that I want to try this on. I was keeping them to rebuild eventually but I think I'm going to try to soak in vodka and dry burn and see how that works.
