They sell some beautiful pipes at a middle eastern eatery and grocer in the town where I live. Hubby sits and stares at them while we eat and inevitably, I end up hearing about his days in the middle east while he was in the navy back in the 70s.
He tells me that the tobacco is very moist and they used an ice cream scoop to fill the pipe.
I won't go into the rest of the story, as there may be some legal issues and it gets pretty weird after the first hour or so. He keeps telling me that we need to buy one, but I really don't see the point....after all, I only have access to the legal stuff to put in it, and I'm sure that it wouldn't be the same. Besides that, there aren't any MPs around to toss him into his berth when things get outta hand.

Hookah History here's a little history on the hookah. Its from the middle east so...you should be able to guess what it was originally used for smoking. It got more popular once Turkey got their hands on it. One of my art professors at college is from Turkey... I should talk to him about the hookah and see if he has any interesting stories to tell. I love my art professor! he's an amazing artist!

This part of the article really sums it up:
Most hookah smoking countries serve Naklia shisha. Naklia shisha is a combination of foreign tobaccos, honey molasses and dried fruit. The smoke is filtered through ice cold water to make the smoke cool and soothing. Older generations smoked hashish and opium, which has created a negative stigma for the hookah that is smoked today. Slowly society is accepting the hookah as more of a pipe for tobacco instead of illegal drugs. The hookah has been growing in popularity in the United States and Europe since the experimentation of the 60's [more]. Now they are in every college head shop and Middle Eastern market across the entire U.S.. It is also growing in popularity in Japan.

"Cigarettes are for nervous people, competitive people, people on the run [] When you smoke a narghile, you have time to think. It teaches you patience and tolerance, and gives you an appreciation of good company. Narghile smokers have a much more balanced approach to life than cigarette smokers." (Ismet Ertep, 71 years Turkey)

How far south are you? There's one hookah bar in Red Bank in central Jersey that I know of, and I'm sure there's more around somewhere.

Although hookah is probably much healthier than other forms of tobacco due to water filtration and the fact that the flavoring is being "semi-vaped" out of the wet glycerin/molasses soaked tobacco, hookah is still very different from vaping, the shisha eventually just burns, and the smoke you're inhaling from the burning charcoal can't be too good for you either. I use to own one that I exclusively smoked shisha out of (no green stuff), very enjoyable, definitely recommend tryin it if you get a chance.

I remember we looked it up and its like the average amount of time a reguler joe spends on a hookah is equilavent to like 96 cigs. The water filtration doesn't do much in the way of filtering.

If the water "filtration" did anything, people wouldn't use a water pipe of any kind (that I won't mention the name of) to smoke that other stuff (that I won't mention the name of). One wouldn't want to filter or reduce the active ingredient; the water only cools the smoke and makes it more palatable. Not that I would know anything about that. :p

Not only weird...almost impossible :) If you don't burn the tobacco, it remains tobacco and is harmless unless you chew it. Could they be saying they use an ecig-like cartomizer and fluid like the hookah and vaporize the tobacco? That would be an interesting concept but it's still smoking :p If you run across the review again, katz, would you share it with us?

How sad! I hope you 'introduced' her ;-)

But of course! had a difficult time explaining "sweet leaf" to her so that her parents wouldn't want to hunt me down though! ;-)
sad thing was - I used the old cheech & chong joke "one day I played Black Sabbath at 78 speed (WHAT SPEED?!)... and then what happened?... I saw GOD!!! LOL
