It is considered safe for inhalation by the fda. It's used in stuff from fog machines to medical nebulizers and has been around for quite a while. It's used for vaping because it has a bit of harshness and gives that feeling in the throat we've become accustomed to from smoking. Some omit the pg to remove the throat hit allowing them to take bigger hits, especially those who are trying to make huge clouds.

PG/VG fog machines have an EPA workplace exposure level in the industry. People who work with fog machines in the movie and stage business are limited in the time they can be exposed to the fog in a workday.

PG is an irritant. VG has some issues with a "heavy lung" feeling for some when they vape too much VG. I sense the same thing when I vape more than 20% VG, but I like the vapor increase. I usually vape 100% PG and sometimes sense the slight irritation if I vape too heavily, but it's not as bad as the feeling I get if I add too much VG. Different atomizers have different levels of irritation. Some are just smoother and milder than others.

Face it, vaping is so much better than smoking that we are all better off vaping like smokestacks than smoking cigarettes, but limiting our exposure is also a good practice. I find myself vaping like a fiend at times, but it's good if I can put it down for a while and let my lungs rest. Clean air is better than smoking OR vaping and we all need some clean air time here and there.

The AMA issued a statement a while back that said vapers may get less lung and throat illness and possibly few case of the flu due to the germicidal properties of propylene glycol. PG is used in hospitals and many buildings as an aerosol introduced into HVAC systems. PG mist in the air encapsulates germs and dust particles that are then floated down to the floor where they can be mopped up and removed when the floor is cleaned.

And clean air is hard to find now a days. :)

Im not real worried about the lung effect since im more of a cigar style smoker and im more so taking this up as a new hobby , i was really just curious and you all answered many of my questions. I actually have never vaped yet but when i smoke a cigar i like them to be a dry smoke so maybe that is the PG that helps that along hasnt bothered me yet.
