I picked up a bottle of saline solution from my local pharmacy today. It is 0.9% Sodium Chloride Irrigation, USP by Baxter. Is it safe to use in my eliquid. I would say yes but the only thing that troubled me was it says not for injection on the bottle which concerns me. Thanks in advance for the replies!

check the ingredients for things like buffering agents and preservatives. If there are any additional ingredients do not use for inhalation.

Sounds safe, but I read something in another ECF thread about the short shelf life of saline ... I've thought about picking some up but made a mental note to check into storage for it.
Yeah I read that too. As a matter of fact this product says to dispose of the unused portion because it doesn't contain a antimicrobial agent. Question is though...aren't you supposed to dilute this in pg 9ml to 1ml/saline? If that's the case isn't pg a preservative?

Edit: On a side note...it is very cheap $5 for 500ml so if I gotta toss it won't be that big of a loss. Think about mixing up a 60ml bottle so I won't have to keep buying it. 60ml should last forever.

I think mixing it with PG was one of the things mentioned. Refrigeration was another. Maybe both would be a good idea.

I read that saline is a good way to add a slightly salty flavor - which is why I wanna try it, more as a flavor enhancer than to add a salty taste. But I know it is a perfect medium for growing microbes, which is why I made a note to determine how best to store it.

Is it safe? Not in my opinion. "Isotonic solution for irrigation only." kind of tells you something. You do not know what is in this solution. I would stay away.
Kosher will be ok, it's coarser (little more effort to dissolve) than canning salt. Both are good.
Which ever you pick, mix-use once and throw away. Saline solutions are used to culture bacteria. From what I have read, I highly recommend, no storage of once used saline solution for vapers unless you are well versed in best laboratory cleanliness practices and have the proper equipment to comply.

Hey dannyv45. I've got a question for you. How do you store your saline? I read you are supposed to dispose any unused saline solution. Do you? If not...do you keep it in the frige? Also do you mix a ratio to mix in your juice or do you add it straight up. Thanks in advance for your reply and all your advice. There are only a handful of members here that I take their advice as gospel and you are one of em. Thanks for all the input you have shared with this forum!

So no updated info from someone who REALLY knows about storing saline? I'm holding off buying this until I have good info!!

It's funny -- all the hoopla about what's in our juice, and I have zero worries (I don't worry 'bout diketones either). But with something seemingly innocuous like saline, I get nervous... lol

What you have to understand is that medical grade saline (Basically sterlized water and salt) in our case is not being used for medical purposes so sterlization is not as big an issue as it would be in the medical field where it's being used for injection or wound care where sterlization is critical. The asumption that most have and that you are reading into are based on use in the medical field and does not really apply to e-juice use so that assumption is wrong. It's being used as an additive in e-juice and does not require the cautions as when used for medical. I store my sealed saline in a cool dark place and keep the opened bottles in a refrigerator. I've used open bottles for as long as a year with no issues. Treat and store it the same way you would treat and store distilled water.

I use the solution straigh up in percents of 7 - 10% depending on how thin I need the juice. Treat it the same way you would treat distilled water.

I just make my own. I make enough to fill a 15 ml juice bottle. Put a cup of water with a 1/2 teaspoon of salt in the microwave. Heat and stir till salt dissolves.

Easy and free!

Edit to add: Use kosher salt.
Do not use kosher salt. It usually contains anti-caking agent (sometimes not, but you have to check). My wife likes to use for cooking pickling salt, the only salt in our neighborhood shops which contain only NaCl, without any additives.

It contains only salt. Nothing else. You can use it.

Noting wrong with storage for at least a few months.

Ns .9% irrigation is safe for ecigs. The reason it's not for iv use is because it "may" have larger nacl particulate in it. It is not processed as thoroughly as an IV solution to verify all the salt molecules are 100% dissolved into the mix.

Honestly you can inject it without ill effects, known from experience.
