It's hard to gauge from the word "harshness" the exact sensation you're referring to. My experience isn't too much greater than yours, but I've discovered there are two very different sensations at the back of my throat from a good hit or a bad one. "Good throat hit" should feel warm, solid but not uncomfortable -- very, very close to the same sensation you would get from taking a good, long pull on an analog cigarette.

"Bad throat hit", though, is a burning sensation at the back of the throat that can trigger a "scratchy" feeling that makes you want to cough. At some point, you'll probably have experienced both and will even be able to tell that your cartomizer or cartridge needs a refill based on feeling the throat hit start to go from the former to the latter.

Also, I agree with onfire -- check your cart/carto/tank to make sure you aren't low on juice, try a juice with a lower nicotine strength, and in the event you're using a variable-voltage e-cig, try adjusting the voltage downward until you get that "good throat hit."
Thanks for the detailed explanation. I'm new to vaping, and I was wondering if the bad throat hit I've been experiencing was what TH was all about. It's a good thing I ordered juice with a lower nic level.

So far, the my top 3 flavors are all from Got Vapes. Butterscotch Blast Bacco, Colossal Caramel Bacco, and the Liqua brand Coffee. The coffee is very true to flavor, to me. Tastes almost like the chocolate covered coffee beans, minus the chocolate. I tried several of the Vape Dudes coffee juices as well and they just didn't quite hit what I was looking for, even though the vanilla coffee is fairly good. I would order their Mocha Java Drizzle again because I've been able to mix it to my personal preference. All of Vape Dudes liquids greatly benefit from extra steep time. The only one I found vapable on delivery was the Pumpkin Pie, but the flavor in that has also really improved over the last couple of weeks. The ones I still find completely unvapable, even after 6 weeks of steeping, are Chocolate Cream, Coconut Cream Pie, and Chocolate Coconut Cream Pie. I forced my way through a mini Nova of each flavor and those are my emergency bottles, in case I ever get desperate lol.

Now that I've isolated the harshness, and eliminated it, I am confident that I can make my own juices. I have orders (waiting to be placed) with Perfumer's Apprentice for flavorings, and with ecigexpress for the unflavored PG nic juice. Basically, for $20 I can get all the ingredients to make half a dozen 30ml bottles of my favorite flavors, and still have enough to modify to vapability the juices I already have. ;)

Good luck with that! We have a huge DIY section with lots of talented DIY members. Once you're good at it, it can be fun and you can save a lot of money.

I've only spent $30 on a box of 12-10ml bottles of spearamint menthol [tastes like a Marlboro Smooth] (that's 25cents per ml, not too bad) and I've been making interesting mixes with extracts like pure Vanilla and Orange. I'm easing my way into the DIY this way so I don't "Ruin" anything and waste money. It's fun, and TASTY!!
